The Future Of Gaming

Started by WO Polaski7 pages

Blax_Hydralisk is correct in saying that Mario and most of the more cartoony mascots won't be leading the video game world for much longer. As society evolves so will game preference, and the way society is going right now the more violent and realistic video game characters like the Master Chief and Cloud Strife and Marcus Fenix will start to take over the gaming industry. The young adults and teenagers that prefer Gears of War, Manhunt, and Halo of today will influence there generation of children with similar violent video games, and games like Mario and Sonic will become less and less popular.

😐

I've noticed something about you. You have a habit of going into threads that I post in and posting something that usually involves me. You did that in the keyblade debate I had against SHin_Gear and in the Lord of the Rings forum. Aside from you almost never post..

And yet 25 years later Mario is still on top.

Notice, though, what happened when Mario Sunshine faced off against Halo:CE. While it may not have dwarfed Mario in sales, it did break break the all time record for most copies of a game bought in like a month. Halo 2 and 3 did likewise.

My overall point was that, despite the fact that Mario is on top now, as society changes so will game preference, and as of late the more violent games have been getting all the spotlight, while the more cartoony, kid freindly games are getting left behind. Gears of War took game of the Year and every other award it was nominated of. Bioshock will more likely then not win game of the year and every award it's nominated in.Both of which are extremely violent, extremely graphic video games. The people who absolutly love these game will pass this preference on to the next generation and so on.

it's a shame because although Halo is my favourite game (Polaski is a character from the novels, actually.), Mario and Sonic are my old school favourites.

I assure you I am not. You just bring up good points 😄

And a handheld Mario game (New Super Mario Bros) outsold both Halo 1 and 2 and 3 thus far (5.2 million). What's your point? New Super Mario Bros has sold over 10 million copies and yet no Halo game nor Gears of War game has reached that mark. And Super Mario Galaxy was the most played game at E3

No actually it didn't. Zelda: Twilight Princess had as many awards (if not more) than Gears and was the highest rated game of 2006 where as Gears got 94% average of all reviews and Zelda got 96% average of all reviews. Oh and Twilight Princess has sold over 5 million where as Gears is just above 4 million.

The thing to remember about games like GOW and Halo and Bioshock...those are games that people who are already gamers, for the most part, play. They're not exactly things that someone who's never played a game before in their life will pick up and play.

Mario, however, is. There will always, always be far more people who are only casual gamers or don't play at all than people who DO play games a lot. Thus games like Mario will always be tops on popularity - they're excellent games, easy enough for anyone to be able to just pick up and play, and with enough challenge for the more hardcore crowd as well.

Tastes within the gaming crowd (ie people who play games a lot, the more hardcore gamers) will change, yes, and personally I'd rather it moves AWAY from the shooter obsession a bit. But the casual/non-gamer crowd will likely remain the same, and that's a far larger group.

Afraid i have to disagree, with you on this. See, I don't think you just get into gaming on a whim. Using myself and my father as an example, we both got into gaming when we went round to my uncles, and see the games he had. We each had a go and decided that we'd get te game. It wasn't a mario game, and i didn't find it easy to learn myself, getting into gaming is hard, controls co-odination and all that is a hassle while your learning. (The game was Lands of Lost Lore II I think).

Though yes, Mario games are easier to pickup and play for a new gamer, I don't really think that counts when someone decides they want to play a game. You won't think "I'll start easy" - you will think "I saw that game, looked fun, i think i could get into it" IMO.

And i kind of have to Agree with WO Polaski, I think Sonic & Mario will become averagely popular characters as opposed to the icons they are now. Though i don't think any game character who's currently hot stuff will last like that long. I think games are like fashion, what's in today is yesterdays news in no time.

I know her, yeah, but she actually registered on my comp when she came over, but she only talked to me once 😬 I haven't seen her in weeks. It annoys me that she keeps following me because people will assume she's my sock 😬

Lol, what so you thought "I'm going to be a gamer, sod what game, just a gamer, ahh mario looks easy to learn..."? lol, hmm?

Dunno about that, i think you saw a/some game/s, and thought, might try that/those...

Super Mario Galaxy was the most played game at E3 and everyone called it flawless and perfect.

Mario hasnt been the future of gamming since mario 64. Mario is Mario

Yeah, and that's exactly what doing something on a whim is. You see it, you think it looks interesting, you try it out. It's not planned or anything.

Oh, oppsy, sorry about that ^^'

I ment, you won't just wake up one morning and think, I'm going to get into gaming.

I ment, when you get into gaming a particular game caught your interest and that game is what you will play (First anyway), reguardless of how hard it is to learn IMO.

Thats why i don't think Mario will be collecting all the new players because, Though this is strickly opinion, compared to other games Mario doesn't look that exciting, just IMO.

For me it was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Genesis.

Well let's see; most games out are basically shooters and you seem advertisement for shooters (Gears of War, BioWare, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, heck even Metroid Prime 3) but then you see a Mario game with Mario facing off against giant creatures traveling through space. Compared to what is being advertised to many Mario would seem like the exciting one because it's not a shooter that's always being advertised so the person who was thinking about gaming would most likely give Mario instead of Gears, BioWar, CoD, Halo, or Metroid because to them they seem to be basically the same game; you run around and shoot.

Play Mario and Gears of War srug

I'd rather play a fun game than just another damn shooter 😛

You missed the point. To the casual gamer or the newbie Gears of War is just the same as Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, BioShock (why did I put BioWare before?), and Metroid Prime 3 but compared to Super Mario; Mario stands out the most.
