And yet how many would someone who hasn't played a game know of? They would know games being advertised most on TV which is mainly shooters. Some fighters and RPGs but with all the commercials for shooters such as Halo 3 or BioShock they are overlooked. When it comes down to it the ones who never cared about a video game won't get into it just by seeing a shooter commercial followed by another commercial for another shooter and pretty soon the non-gamer only sees the same thing; shooting because that's pretty much what's being showed.
Well i admit i don't watch TV that much, but i haven't seen a Mario advert since Sunshine. Last Sonic advert was Shadow's game, Choose good or Evil etc....
5 minutes ago however there was an advert of Heavenly Sword for the PS3. Plus i haven't seen a shooter advert since Bioshock, and that was a few weeks ago.
Shooter adverts obviously aren't as spammed over here in England as they are at your end.
Longest time a game was advertised on TV that i myself can recall was Prince of Persia 2, Followed by World of Warcraft each lasting over 2 months on adverts on TV when they were released. Yes i know other games have lasted much longer even if i don't know which games, but thats not the point.

And yet most people will look only at the few being advertised like Gears of War, Halo 3, BioShock, Metroid Prime 3, and not see commercials or anything for other games like Twilight Princess or Tekken 6. In fact the only commercials I have seen for a game that's not a shooter is for Phantom Hourglass on the DS (and some sports and crappy Wii games; but come on those gay carnival games on the Wii won't make someone go get a console). Seeing the same genre advertised to the non-gaming crowd pretty much convinces those non-gamers that video games would be the same thing.
You seriously didn't see all the Twilight Princess advertisments? they were everywhere, TV, internet, Posters, Magazines for months before their Due release, Promotions in game stores....
Tekken always has commercials on TV and is always splashed all over any Game Magazine i see in the shop down the road
Oookay then, If you say so I'll believe you because I don't live within 1,000 miles of you, and it shows by this. I know if a new Halo comes out i can expect to see 6ft cardboard images of Master Chief in a store. But Bioshock, and the others you mentioned weren't advertised any bigger than a normal game IMO.
I'm not that into gun games, but i think your wrong when you say they above all others are shoved in our faces, that is not true, and I don't think that causes less people to go into gun games, and more into Mario and Sonic.
You can see how recent sales records have shown that Less and less people in terms of % of the gaming comminty are buying the Mario & Sonic games. Sure, the numbers of sales are going up, that doesn't mean the % of people playing them who play games or who are coming into games is rising too. Infact when you look at it that way, those two are indeed losing out big time to Halo and other games. Warcraft too is gobbling up more and more people into it's addictive gameplay. It appears your trying to make out Mario, Sonic and the like will be immortal as game characters, that simple is not the case.
