He was clearly in immense pain just from touching the guy, and he didn't give up.

Sorry, but an elite top tier isn't mowed down without a decent tussle, or extenuating circumstances like J'onn was in S/B recently.
J'onn was mindcontrolled, but it took 3 people to hold one arm of Superman back, while he lumped Kilowog with the other. J'onn was one of those three.
He's just not the pinnacle of the top tier in DC, and it'd be a lie for you to say otherwise.
