I'd assume that the "disintegrating relationship" is part of his "humane" side. And, I don't like that either. Perhaps because of my own background, but I have a special disliking for ******* law enforcers and shitty parents... which he seems to fit the bill for both.
So, I dunno. My outlook on people is pretty bias so I guess it's not something to really think about.
It bothers me alot though, the whole "tough on criminals" thing. When they catch the killer the killer's usually a jerk or openly rebellious or oversarcastic, it's easy to hate him/her, and then the main character looks cool because he's also oversarcastic and he calls the guy scum bag over and over and has a dark humor and it's "cool", even though it's not. In reality most police officers are more afraid of the othet guy than the other way around and don't talk nearly as much shit as they do on Televsion, and criminals are usually that guy who lives next door to you and needed help but never got it, not some obivious control freak pyshco with a loud mouth and an overly sarcastic smart ass personality, which CSI and Law and Order the like like to paint them as.
