Today's Vettes sound a lot ballsier than many of their contemporaries. But when I say "muscle sound" I'm referring to the distinctive roar of cars from the early 70's, who's hoods had to have a hole cut out in the center to accommodate the valves of the carburetor. Nothing today sounds even remotely close to the way those did.

Highly doubt that, only two were ever made even though it was an option offered at all the dealers. Most usually went with the much cheaper L88 option.

I thought 2000 were being made?

*googles*

Yup.

Is it yours? If not, how did you find the opportunity to drive it?

I once owned a black '69 Charger, but I totaled it 12 years ago. 🙁

Yeah but I'm talking about the Corvette ZL-1 option, which was available back in the late 60's, not the new ZR1. Only two of those were made. Aluminum alloy 427 block that put out 560 hp in street trim, 800+ when used on the can-am cars!

You should take pics if someone does get a ZR1 in your area though 🤣

Friend of mine came by to show it off. He is a trust fund child.

I like my volvo, top quality.

But I REALLY like the new Mustangs, if I had the money I´d get one of those for sure.

DAMNIT! 🙁

My bad...

You'd think that your mentioning "L88" and "427" would have given away what you were talking about, right? In my defense, there's a shit load of acronyms floating around in my head right now (taking an IT cert test on Monday) and distinguishing Z06, Z07(sting ray...SS...whatever), ZR-1, and ZL-1 in my head is a task.

I'll try, just for you. flirt It's like a Corvette and Bimmer lot on the front row outside of each building, where I work. I saw an H2 parked outside the day before yesterday. I lol'd at the monstrosity at this gas priced age...but they can probably afford the gas 🙁

See, as a non-enthusiast it just sounds to me like there's something wrong with the car. I don't understand the need for a car to sound like that. In Tarrytown New York my father is spinning in his grave. He was a greaser, drag racer that would have understood. I, on the other hand, don't see the appeal. To me it sounds like something is loose and it's burning way more gas than is neccessary to get from point A to point B.

Exactly the way I feel about it.

I honestly think the high gas prices everywhere will be the only thing that'll convince southerners to dump their Ford pick-ups for hybrids. The soaring prices will make them so appealing.

I hate to say it, but no one is dumping their cars in favor of hybrids. Hybrid, "more efficient" cars are practically the thing of scince-fiction. The only people that drive hybrids are people who can afford to drop a couple of hundred thousand dollars on impressing other people. Which, strangly, is the same mind set of people who buy, restore and maintain classic cars that go Vroooom! Ecological technology is a luxury only the rich can afford. Perhaps with all the press it's getting these days (every other commercial and now it's own TV channel) the price will come down, slightly. But I personally think that's about as likely as the price of a gallon of milk dropping below three bucks. Environmental disaster aside, there's money to be made. And that will always come first. Otherwise we'd have a fuctional public transportation infrastructure in this country. At least one that wasn't tanked and undermined by the oil industry (Which poises itself to become the "energy"industry more and more every day. Exxon and Shell are so concerned with the environment that they're still selling 5 dollar gasoline while dumping millions into research for alternative research, which they'll own and market in exactly the same way they do now with their sludge.)

We can't assume that a disaster for the environment should transcend the appeal of making a buck. Not in this country or any other; any more than we should assume the disaster isn't on some level a manufactured marketing ploy.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the growling that beautiful Vette. Since your dad was a greaser, I know the healthy roar of that V-8 would give him a hard-on. If you can't appreciate it, you likely never will and are beyond any hope.

And I'd still rather keep and maintain my Impala, than trade it in for a hybrid.

I am absolutely beyond the hope of understanding the appeal of that gas-guzzling sound. There's no arguing that. However, my father was almost 20 years older than my mother and the logistics of that vroom was a bit beyond his generation. No, I doubt I'll ever understand the appeal of having a car that makes more noise than an orgasmic korean chick. I grew up listening to the sounds of reving engines and flaming carborators. I even have pictures of myself in the drivers seat with a helmet on. But I still don't buy into the need for an automotive substitution for my cock. So, like I said: I'll never get it. My brother picked up on it, but apparently I missed out. He's still buying cars and motorcycles from that era. Personally, I'd rather wait 20 minutes for the bus.

Well, then we both look forward to the day when there's a 16 cylinder, 200 mpr alternative to the 1954 vet that still meets all it's man-charging positives.

Hybrids are crap anywho. Pretty much converting air pollution into ground pollution. Buy a BMW diesel if you want performance and economy. 260 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque, all while still getting 40 mpg hwy.

An even more interesting concept is the Mercedes Benz Diesotto engine. Has the advantages of both a gas and diesel engine without the minuses, and cleaner emissions than both. High revs and spark ignition when you hit the gas, but reverts to compression ignition when cruising or only using moderate amounts of throttle. 238hp and 295 lb-ft from a 1.8L turbo engine and returning 39 mpg hwy in a Mercedes S-class which is a 4,000+ lb car.

Not to mention, rumor has it the next generation of corvette, the C7, will be weighing in at under 3,000 lbs and using the new form of variable valve timing for pushrod engines, meaning it's expected to achieve 30+ mpg hwy, in a corvette, while still putting out 400+ hp 🙂

Count me out. Nothing today or in the future will ever replace the '54 Vette Roadster. Or any other street beast from the era, for that matter.

Incidentally: 1954 was the first year of the Corvette. Good job, Dave.
