Star Wars: The Old Republic [KOTOR MMO]

Started by Turr_Phennir64 pages

{From a perspective of a film purist, Dooku actually alerts the Republic and the Jedi to the existence of Darth Sidious, who is the true evil in the galaxy. One could interpret that as a noble decision, one of a man who is only going along with the Emperor's plans in an effort to kill him when the time is right. [Which is coincidentally true, just not for altruistic reasons.]}

Before they actually revealed anything, I honestly was hoping for a role-playing element that wouldn't have to lean on the flawed "Be a self-sacrificing altruistic idiot, a thieving murderous petty megalomaniac, or entirely devoid of personality," and instead offer roleplaying where you choose your side up front, and then play the nuances of each side. For example, a Sith who could solve a situation by murdering everyone involved, or helping out for a high fee, or subtly manipulating everyone so that he came out ahead with some money and some extra accessories for the effort. That game I would buy in an instant, because that level of roleplay would be something truly unique and genre-defining.

Yes, yes yes!

That's the game I want to play. Things even close to that are pretty rare in modern rpgs.

Nephthys and Ares are completely right in this case.

SW may not have been the most comples of movies out there (obviously), but it's certainly not as simple as the other two are making it out to be. And why can a series not become more complex as time goes on...? Is that not just better for the series?

Consider the video game series Gears of War. They have been getting better at story telling with each new game. Am I going to call them out on it and condemn them for it? No........I'm going to congratulate them. People are giving Star Wars more complexity and new depths/levels. This personally makes me extremely happy. I would love a SW with more depth.

Whilst I absolutely agree with GK that a Dark Side experience that looked into the complexity of life on the Dark Side and explored the various means within it would be an awesome thing...

... and as everyone knows, I am a bit of a movie purist in general...

... this one I don't mind THAT much. If, as Nepthys says, your moral development as a Sith class on the Empire's side comes BEFORE you've fully committed to the cause then there is wriggle room; it would depend on how the plot handles it.

There's not much logical sense overall, in that from a gameplay point of view you'd still be fighting against the Republic in all the flashpoints etc. and it is indeed Bioware's 'jerk vs. saint' morality mallet in action, most likely... but these are the limitations of a computer game as a medium when it comes to storytelling. I'll give leeway for that.

I also accept the idea that outside of the films there is a certain extra complexity that various authors and creators may want to explore, pushing on the boundaries somewhat. I do think there are some red lines that should not be crossed though. There is definitely a point where you can get to where I just feel "This really isn't Star Wars any more...".

(In contrast, I just cannot wrap my head around the idea that that 'Aliens: Colonial Marines' is set on Hadley's Hope AFTER the film... when it got destroyed by a nuclear explosion! Ahhhhhh! That was the POINT!)

Shame, you're missing out on a sweet Twilek GF.

who you happen to kinda own

Screw Twileks. And not literally. They steal all the good hooking jobs from hard-working Zeltrons.

I wouldn't mind owning one, but she would get NO play.

Y'know, one of the most hilarious out of character RP convos that's ever happened started with me wondering why there's such an obsession with Twi'leks. It ended with Rex saying "The Force is my condom" (and being asked if that was his battle cry).

Yeah.

😛

Yeah, I'd say that "Light Side Sith" crosses that line. As in, the line is the US-Mexico border, and we're suddenly in Canada.

Force is my condom. lul.

If you have sex with someone using ONLY the Force, is it cheating? Relevant question. Full discussion:

I mean... it was a nuclear explosion to kill all the aliens! That was the point! Ahhhhh!

Anyway, having been told in the EU area that, contrary to my interpretation of the possibility of being someone trained as a Sith but saw they were evil and turned against them, TOR instead actually just has you as... a' Light Sided Sith'... still fighting FOR the Sith, it seems, I shall repost what I said there:

-

"I am relatively flexible about a plot where someone trains as a Sith but realises their ways are wrong and gets out before it is too late.

But the idea that you could be actually fighting for the Sith, advancing their evil aims, but be on the Light Side... and the other Sith are ok with this? At this point I am querying why you are using the term 'Sith' at all, as it is pretty much contrary to all presented meanings of the term, film and EU, that a. a Light Sider would fight for them and b. the Dark Lord(s) of the Sith would be ok with having a Light Sider in their ranks.

We all know that doesn't really scan on so many levels.

I mean, the Empire are INVADING the Republic, yes? For purely selfish purposes? With a surprise attack based on a pretence of peace? And I know the Republic has its corruption issues, but they are still the injured party here and the Jedi are defending them not because that's just what side their on, but because it is the right thing to do. How many have died because of the invasion, born out of selfishness and greed- the essence of the Dark Side?

So why would anyone on the Light Side fight FOR that? And considering the enormous possibility that they would realise "hang on, I'm fighting for the bad guys here, shouldn't I stop them instead?", why would their commanders not have thrown them out (or, more Sith-like, killed them) ages ago?

This is getting a certain distance from some basic Star Wars principles. If you want to create a political organisation which has both Light and Dark Siders fighting for it (geez, that's already not very Star Wars) then whatever, but to then try and pass off such a thing as 'The Sith', which is a pure bad guy thing in continuity... seems very weird to me."

Eloquently put, Ush.

REVIEWS!

Jeezus Christ thats alot of text in that second one!

The 3rd review of the second link (easily the best one):

'To that note, I will explain something: I haven’t had the privilege of playing Tera, so I won’t comment on it. However, I will comment on how Guild Wars 2 plays in comparison, as I HAVE played it at Gamescom before, and will tell you this: they both play similarly.'

mmm

Now you've done it...

Not really.

'However, to say the game JUST has V/O is garbage. It has cinematic V/O. This means it isn’t just one NPC speaking at your character in a tremendously bad accent (AGE OF CONAN!!!), or two still cutouts of the NPC and your character on screen as subtitles flash up on top (Tsk, tsk, Guild Wars 2); this is top-notch, heavy duty shit. I mean, I’m talkin’ killing people’s families so you can draw them out of a hiding with a double force choke, or stabbing a failed Sith Lord through the skull with your lightsaber. And the choices you get to make? Some of them are so satisfying, I will literally cancel the conversation just so I can watch it again. It’s that good.'

NOW I've done it.

GW2 is also very much not done. I mean, they haven't even announced the last profession yet. The demos shown at gamescom are not complete and are only a taste of how the game will play.

Cutscenes aren't really that important anyway in a game like that. I'd rather less was spent on that and more on the actual gameplay.

And no, GW2 does not play like TOR at all. TOR plays like WoW 😛

Oh well I'm sure you'd know right, having played both games. 😛

There are no gaming conventions around me >:{

I do have many friends who've been to PAX, gamescom, etc., and have played both. Consensus is - GW2 does not play like TOR (or, really, like any other game out), and TOR plays just like WoW.

I've also seen plenty of videos of both.

Yes but this guy made me laugh so I believe him. estahuh

Just skimmed through several pages of this thread, so sorry if I missed this, but what exactly is meant by Light Side Sith?

If this is simply a member of the Sith species, who use "Light Side Powers" like Healing, Shielding, Boosting etc, then I guess it should be fine. The movies tell us that a Darksider and Lightsider can do the same things, just that the Darksiders tend to favor the more "evil powers", but can still use the "good powers" when needed (pretty sure Yoda could summon Force Lightning if he chose to, based on AotC).

(And yes, Hadley's Hope should be a smoking crater in Colonial Marines...)

It was a nuclear blast! They even specified that the only way to be sure was to nuke it! ANd yet this game has it survive- with loads of aliens running around, more or less invalidating the entire end of the game!

And they justify it on "Oh, Hadley's Hope was designed to withstand hostile environments..."

Raaaaaaaage!

-

Anyway, no, it is not a member of the Sith species; it is someone trained as a Sith but making morally Light Side chocies throughout... but for some reason still fighting for the Sith.

*end of the movie I assume you meant.

So it's any species, on the Sith Empire faction, trained as a Sith, being a goody-two-shoes? Huh, that's weird, will have to look it up further.
