Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks is your best bet.
Depends how widespread the infection has become.
At first sign of initial outbreak, it would be wise to spend all your money stocking up on food, water and other consumables, supplies, electronics, radio, gas etc. Weapons is also essential. I'd just be buying them by the truck full.
Also, make sure you buy lots of bicycles and supplies for it, as its probably one of the best vehicles in a zombie apocalypse scenario in the long run.
I'd board up my house real good. Trying to get out of the city will probably be futile as the roads will just be jammed.
The ideal house should be 2 storeys with a basement. Also fenced. Fences should be further built for extended height and also reinforced by strong materials. Balconies are also a nice addition, so you can have an overview and easy position for taking out incoming zombies.
Robert Neville from I Am Legend has got the right idea, in fact he has probably done a better job than is practically possible since he has free passage during the day. I am assuming the zombies dealt with here are active 24/7. But I would say he has set the gold standard for a temporary fortress.
Also, it would be wise to pool in with a few mates of expertise in different areas. Ideally, engineers, doctors and people with military experience. Also, you don't want too many people in your group/house, about 5-10 is good.
Basically if you've done everything right, you should have plenty of food and supplies to last you for at least 2-3 months. During this time, you can go out in groups of 3-4 at a time to salvage more food and supplies.
But if this is an "Apocalypse", then the house fortress is not going to be ideal for too long. During the first few weeks you should be planning to take over a new fortress. Some place larger, with inherent advantages (factory with supplies is a good example) and stronger walls.
Some examples of THE ideal situations are rare and obviously not everyone will be able to acheive it.
One such situation is to live on an island and develop a self sustaining environment, this means growing your own food etc etc. Since the living area is larger, it is beneficial to have more people working and guarding the borders. When appropriate, teams would be sent out via boat to gather supplies from the main land.
Another similar situation is to live on a oil drilling platform. However, it would be very important to have experienced engineers as part of the crew. They could maintain the machinery, and the oil could be a source of long-lasting energy source. Food can also be obtain from marine life. The threat of zombie contact is virtually non-existent. However, periodically, teams will still have to be sent to the main land to gather supplies etc. However the risks should be minimal.
I will say though, that the chances of survival a Apocalypse outbreak are minute if one is not sufficiently prepared.
Preparation would involve creating a self-sustainable environment. For example this could be done if one built a strong walled house (with ideal fencing etc) out in the outback or areas far away from the general population. Ideally, it would be near a river, a good environment to grow plants etc. Preparing would take several months, stocking up the house/fortress with adequate supplies for a year or more. There should also be an armory stocked full of weapons, preferably including high explosives, .50 calibre machine guns, assault and sniper rifles.
A good strategy is to create a mote, or a very deep ditch around the fortress. If done correctly, you should not expect many zombies to find you because you have built your place so far out from the population. But in the case zombies arrives, they will fall into the ditch. You can then dispatch them by throwing a few molotov cocktails at them.
Again, you should have planned in advance who is going to come with you when the outbreak occurs.
Thats all for now.
Seems to me that the ol' cliche course of action is still the best bet. Find survivors, supplies and guns and then get to the docks...,steal a ship and look for an uninfected island.
Although, the more i think about it the more i believe that anywhere above ground would be unsafe. At this point i'd be less worried about zombies and more worried about the world militaries as well as being mistaken for a zombie. I think in a real zombie world apocalypse i'd do one of two things...,engage in a massive drug overdose or hit the sewers, either way i'd die as would the rest of humanity.

I think REAL zombies would need to swim and they'd stop being zombies as soon as pufferfish went out of season.
Real zombies are pussies.
Fictional undead that want nothing more than to eat your brains, they're ****ing bad-ass. Except with for those 1968 versions, you can take them down with a boot-heel.

Real zombies don't exist.
Yes, they do.
A zombie is a person living in Haiti in the Voodoo culture who has been enslaved to another as penance or conquest using specially collected and reformulated tetrodotoxin obtained from puffer fish during the spring season. The zombie is basically a person with an incredibly low metabolism and free thought but no free will. He or she remains a zombie as long as the toxin is administered as a chemical restraint. It's considered a barbaric practice and numerous anti-zombie and zombie rights groups have been set up.
