Guild Wars 2 finally starts to come to life

Because people want the cosmetic stuff, which was proven time and time again in GW1. It's still rare and damn difficult to get - the dungeon stuff will require several runs through a dungeon on explorable mode, the cultural stuff is freaking pricey and generally you will not be able to afford it right away once you hit that level. And then there's legendaries that we haven't even seen yet but we know for at least one legendary item requires you to max out at least one crafting discipline.

It's not a gear grind - if you have crafted armor and I have Nightmare dungeon armor, mine isn't necessarily going to be better - because it's not required, but people will definitely be going for it, because the appearance is different and rare.

There's also the fact that the game changes continuously - different events pop up depending on how previous ones turn out, and they've said that they're going to tweak the content often, so if, say, you return to your starter area a month after the game launches, you may find a completely new DE there.

Stop thinking of the game as a typical MMO. It's not. If you just rush to level 80, you're going to find that you missed half the game. There isn't a typical end game to it because the game starts at level 1, not level 80, and they've said before that end game doesn't start at the end.

Also, the reason why most games have to have a gear grind, is that they have to keep people playing in order to get those subscription fees. There's plenty here to keep people interested without going "okay if you want to do that one area you need armor with +5 against demons which means you need to grind this area repeatedly hoping it'll drop for you".

Not stuck in it. :-p just curious what they got planned. I'm all for innovative games that break the mold. Hell, I welcome it as I don't have the time I used to have (back in my WoW days) due to work/relationship. Without a gear grind, however, they'd need to keep hardcore players' interest somehow. Progression and exploration can only keep a player going for so long.

Really though, if you are asking that question in that way, you are stuck in it. There is nothing extra or special about 'endgame'. There is just the game. Play it for as long as it is fun. Their motto has been 'the whole game is endgame'. The last thing they want to do is create any form of artificial experience of drudgery that you can only get to when the plot is done just to keep people hooked into empty gameplay- only subscription games need that.

Yes.

Other games like WoW do not care about you having fun. They care about you paying them $15 a month. That's it.

The entire philosophy behind GW2 and why they've done what they have is "Is it fun for the players?". If it's not (like gear grinding), it's been tossed out.

Any time someone starts asking about end game, I picture them as someone who somehow rushed to level 80, finished the story, and then is standing in Orr going "well now what?", without realizing that they ran right past 75% of the game without even realizing it.

Well, not exactly. "Endgamers" CAN tend to be the ones rushing thru content to get to the higher challenges of the game (missing most of the joirney to get to the destination). But they can also be the players who want to play a game for as long as possible. There is a limitation simple cosmetic upgrades can have n terms of longevity. Once you basically look the "best" you want to (w/c can happen pretty early in the game, a lot of us tend to get attached to how early gear looks compared to endgamr gear), then what?

Exploration also has its limitation, once you've seen content once, is there really a reason to play that portion again? Also, in terms of multiplayer, what if your friends have seen it already? Would they want to see that portion of the game again?

As innovative as their (ArenaNet) "everything is endgame" approach, they MUST have considered the fact that there are many players out there who tend to "rush to highest lvl right away" as their playstyle. Not saying that's me as I'm more of a completionist myself than a rusher. Are rushers then not welcome to this game? Shold they find their MMO fun elsewhere? I consider having as varied a playerbase as more of a boon to MMOs and several of my gamer friends tend to rush to the end themselves, that's why I'm asking now. Couldn't really get into the beta (due to me being out of town atm) so I just wanted to find out a bit on info on this game as I find many of its features interesting.

Also, not sure why I'm being told that I'm "stuck" on something when I'm simply asking questions from a position of uninformed curiosity. Was there an actual format of wording my questions properly to not seem "stuck" or what?

Yes, because you seem to think it is necessary to have such a system, and they do not. Their point of view is pretty much that your question is not even relevant. So long as you ask "what is there to do instead of grinding", then you are in a whole different mindset to theirs. Like I said before, what there is to do at the end is just play the game, for as long as you find that fun.

All you are saying here is that games are finite. That is the way of things, and artificial extension of that (for purely subscription based reasons) was always poor. They are just concentrating on making the game- all of it, not just some end portion- as good as they can. They want to consign the endgame notion to history. If people rush the storyline and don't want to do anything else, that is their loss, though saying it is not the game for them is misleading because even just doing the storyline will give them as much entertainment as a full price game should give, so they still get their money's worth. Arenanet thinks it's not a wider issue, and I think they are right.

Not to mention that with how the game is designed, it'll be very difficult to rush to max level. If you know what you're doing you'll level pretty quickly, and I can see people who did the BWEs getting to 30 very quickly because we're familiar with the early content (a friend of mine was 36 at the end of BWE3, I was at 25, and I saw a lot of people in that range), but that likely won't be the norm.

You can't just grind out levels fighting mobs, as they give minimal experience - you get more from gathering. The game isn't meant to rush you to the end and then high level stuff starts.

With any luck, the rushers will slow down and notice there's a whole huge game around them. If not, that's their loss. ANet isn't required to cater to every gaming style, and I'm glad they aren't with that.

...I'm mainly posting this because I'm giggling madly at the fact that not only were mine and GK's posts about the beta linked, but we were the first ones linked in there.

Also I'm doing another interview with ANet, so I'll have that ready probably close to release 😄

Some stuff about the writing of the game and particular about how they handle the player characters.

Two things:

1. Headstart starting time has been announced - it'll start at midnight PDT on the 25th. Which means I need to stay up until 2am to make my characters. Sleep schedule? What's that?

2. There's a short stress test tomorrow from noon until 4pm PDT. Which means I get to play for a few hours when I get home from work, wheee!

Nearly every armor set in the game. That's what I spent the stress test doing - previewing EVERYTHING 😄

Are her boobs meant to be that color?

But I did notice thing apart from boobies. Very nice on the whole. Better than TOR's armor sets.

Sylvari character creation is ridiculous. I didn't realize how vibrantly different the skin pattern color was from the actual skin color I picked 😛 I noticed it at the end of the BWE when I got my shiny racial armor and went "whoops..." 😂 ahh well.

That's actually not all of the sets - there were a few (the cultural armors for the other races) that I couldn't preview. And there's still legendary stuff that has yet to be seen at all. But that is nearly every set in the game there.

Has links to all of the weapons as well. Shiiiny.

Creepy.

😂

Seriously, there are like...five different color palettes for sylvari (skin, skin pattern, bioluminescence, hair, and eyes). Because they glow, they look vastly different at night than during the day. I didn't even realize at first in character creation that your hair glows!

Just to show how vastly different they can look, these are the ones I made during the beta (last one I made during the stress test while trying to decide what my character will look like at launch):

And here's my sister standing next to me, all in purple:

With a couple of my friends and an ANet dev, all sylvari (very different in appearance)...one of the people in our party wasn't in the screenshot, though, and I wish I'd gotten a cap of how her character looked, because her sylvari was truly gorgeous.

It's funny, because as far as actual options (different faces and hairstyles) they have the least out of all of the races, though I've seen people saying not all options were in. And yet, because they have so many different color palettes and so many color options within that, you'll see the most variety amongst the sylvari.

Stuff!

First, the finalized server list for launch:

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/introducing-the-worlds-of-guild-wars-2/

My guild is going to be on Jade Quarry for the most part (and that's going to be my home server). We're also already planning ridiculousness for headstart. The main idea right now involves livestreaming some alcohol-induced gameplay (may possibly include cliffjumping in WvW).

Second, while headstart officially will begin at midnight PDT on the 25th, they've said that they may open the servers up to three hours early. So obviously I'll be sitting here mashing "login" the moment it hits 11pm where I am 😛

Also there is a stress test tomorrow from 12-4pm PDT. I take credit for this as on Sunday I asked on twitter for ANet to schedule a stress test on Tuesday or Wednesday so I can actually play 😛

Oh, and yet another sylvari I've made. This is how my guardian will look at launch:

Also my Elementalist with GK's sylvari warrior he made during one of the recent stress tests:
http://i.imgur.com/AjZSz.jpg

I've added yet another sylvari to my collection - I needed to record their intro, so that meant playing around with making a new character.

http://i.imgur.com/Nzjhf.jpg

They're too much fun to play with during creation.

I also, after recording every vista in the sylvari areas, spent the stress test playing with dyes.

GK and I also went through this really cool little area I found a while ago after doing a jumping puzzle; I wish I had recorded it because it was so neat. Gorgeous little area swarming with Nightmare Court, including many veteran enemies. So cool.

Also, I had this happen. Somehow I glitched and was transparent for a while.

So guesting will not be in at launch. Boooo.

But they will have free server transfers available for a while. Which is nice.

Still, the lack of guesting is going to make my guild's planned headstart shenanigans difficult...

Yeah, tricky one that. The guesting system is one the main things that puts GW2's server architecture beyond that of the average RP. Hopefully it comes in relatively quickly.
