Superman wins of course (pre flash point) since he would use speed and reflexes to make Thanos appear to be moving at a very slow rate (maybe statue). He would then easily be able to avoid attacks and as well land attacks on Thanos. The freeze breath tactic could be used to slow Thanos motion down even further to obtain more free hits. Plus Thanos can't fly or propel himself forward. Superman could blow him twisting in the air and then proceed to attack Thanos from all sides. If Thanos manages to shield himself then Superman slowly crumbles the shields after sufficient amount of hits. Thanos can't attack while his shields are up since they would be also blocking his attacks.
Now as far as Nu52 Superman, it would be a tougher fight. His fighting speed could be lower. Feats anyone? His freeze breath isn't as potent.
Thanos does have a chance here but Nu52 Superman still edges him due to being vastly faster.

You use this argument whenever anyone pits an enhanced and/or Master Martial artist against spider-man. CIS isn't off here, otherwise Superman would just fight every opponent at his maximum combat speed to be on the safe side and would never take a hit unless [reasons] or the opponent was faster.
He doesn't there, so he doesn't here. We're not arguing powerset vs Powerset. Its character vs. Character.
I would normally pick Thanos to win over Superman at least 9/10 but OP specifies that this is OWAW Superman. That guy was doing insane kinds of things like smashing imperiex probes, for example. With such a massive sundip, all his powers and stats were amplified greatly. I think it could go either way, tbh.

That's easy Carver, because Thanos brings more to the table than Superman does. In OWAW superman wasn't outthinking people, he was just brute forcing his way past people. He'll need to bring more to the table than strength and speed to beat thanos. Thanos is always thinking before battle.. mid battle... all the time. So when you combined his tactical awareness, with being ruthless, with being far more versatile, and likely close to as strong... It's easy to see how'd he'd win. He's already more powerful than superman and close to as strong... so what exactly is Superman going to do? Overwhelm him with speed? There are shield to deal with that.. force block to deal with that... teleportation to gain more distance at any point in the fight. There is the constant threat of mind rape...or at the very least giving superman pause and needing to combat that, which could take his eyes away from things that are working best for him or open a door for Thanos to gain an advantage. In short, Thanos brings more to the table and is tactically smarter than Superman as well.
