A couple things strike me- Natsu is still in his 'defending the guild' mode.
The two Saberteeth are probably on the level of earlier-series Natsu.
Two on one is less horrible when many of your best attacks are area-effect. It's just as easy to blast both as one.
And there was that bit about him and Gajeel both having figured out the duo's attacks. So simple experience.

I dont think that they ever had a chance. After taking everything sting had to dish out, Natsu and Gajeel just suddenly stood up. They purposely took the hits then shrugged it off. They got hurt, but not a single major or minor injury.
Judging by how Gejeel took the hits like natsu and how he also instantly recovered, he's on Natsu's level.
Poor posers never stood a chance. Much like how Laxus beat the living shit out of Raven Tails, Team Fairy Tail is going to deliver some massive beating to Sabertooth.
Only chance Sabertooth has is if their magic can counter fair tails magic. Only dood who has a chance is the memory make guy. The Sabertooth chick is going to get sliced and diced by Erza and the lightning dood is going to get beaten to a pulp by Laxus. Unless of course the two posers are way below the other 3 then the rest might have a chance.
Damn. Like...damn. I like Natsu being all awesome but...damn. Gajeel didn't get to shine. Shame. Although well had he joined it would have been an epic curbstomp...well it was but you you know what I'm saying.
Looks like Zeref is thinking that Natsu is approaching the level Zeref wanted Natsu to be at when they encountered each other on the island.
I wouldn't mind Erza losing and Laxus getting worked up.

You know it strikes me, part of the problem is that Sting, the one of the two with better offense, blew a lot of his magic splitting his attention between the two of them, at the only point he was able to draw ahead thanks to raw power. Maybe if he hadn't foolishly used up a lot of his power on someone made of iron, he could've dealt Natsu more damage.
No. Sting just didn't have the raw power to actually deal Natsu or Gajeel any significant damage.

Someone not worth crap doesn't get the edge against Natsu and Gajeel for even a moderate time. The FTers weren't just letting themselves get beat, after all.
I'd say it's a matter that Sting can temporarily put himself above their level, but only with dragon force and it chews up too much juice in a long fight.
I'd say the Sabertoothers are fairly strong, can temporarily become more so, and Natsu just got a magic amp as well as fighting to protect the guild in his eyes which always makes him stronger. So yea, I do think Natsu is really, really strong, and if it'd been pre-timeskip and the training/boosts they got, then the FT pair could've still probably won, but it would've been much harder.

Consider that this contest has gone on for years and their team consistently comes out on top even when facing the strong fighters like that, I'd say that's fairly unlikely.
Sabertooth basically drew themselves up to where they thought FT was before (though they were probably just near that level, which is still really badass), and Fairy Tail's best are no longer that level.
Did you see their goofy faces when they stood up? That tells me that the two were just playing around. Once Natsu got serious it was game over for the two posers.
Natsu took on the two posers at the same time and neither of the two managed to land a hit. Not to mention their combined might (unison raid) was easily over powered by Natsu. Unison raid doesn't just combines the magic but it gets amplified, much like how Lucy and Luvia managed a Unison raid back in the tower arc. And as Jelal said, The magic produced is greater than the sum of its parts.
For Natsu to overcome that his magic attacks power must be > the two posers magic combined and then some. Face it, If Natsu and Gajeel went serious at the begining, the two weak ass sabertooth members would be a lump of shit from the get go.
As for Sabertooth's standing as the strongest guild, its like saying that lets say in a room full of midgets there in the center is Shaq. Take away O'neal and what we have is still a room of midgets.
Thats how I see it. Wendy and Lucy have always been weak so them getting their ass beaten or drawing is nothing special. And as for Fair Tail being dead last, well, look at them, almost everyone left, even the rats probably left.
Face it, the hype that this arc placed on sabertooth and everyone else being far stronger just isnt living up to expectations. Natsu and the second origin may be something to think about but 3 months of training will not do much and thats all that Gajeel got. Even Goku needs more than a few months to get stronger 😛
Honestly, I was ok with Sabertooth being billed as the guild to beat, but with what we saw with the match between the dragon slayers and how stupidly one sided it was, well, that was a total let down. I would have liked it better if the fight was very close with Natsu and Gajeel barely edging out a win. But nooooooo, it was so one sided that it was lame.

Natsu only faught Sting, so he just went out and beat the other dood just coz he can.
I know that the two 3rd gen dragon slayers are supposedly really strong. They were billed as if they would one hit pimp slap natsu and gajeel. But nooooooo, We get a one sided one on two beat down.
Obviously, the other members of Sabertooth thought that Natsu and Gajeel would get beaten up good. You can see it on their faces as the shock of Natsu beating up the two. Now if Natsu and Gajeel are that strong, how much stronger would Erza be as she too also had her second origin unlocked.
Funny, looking back at the stat issue, looks like Natsu's offense, defense and speed are all 6/5 or more. Erza too as she took on 100 beasties.
I now have little expectations for the rest of the tournament and hope that the main story arc would be better.
Actually, after everything that has transpired, the core members of Fairy Tail probably are not far stronger than what they were. Look at how things turned out.
1. Lucy can now use that awesome spell
2. Wendy now knows how to fight and was able to draw with a mage who used forgotten magic
3. Laxus owned the entire Raven Tail team including his father. But back then, his father was confident that he could easily take away the lacryma crystal within Laxus.
4. Mira Jane one shots her opponent
5. Erza took on 100 monsters including an S class beast that was said to be able to match the power of a saint mage
6. Gajeel and Natsu took the best attacks of a dragon slayer in dragon force mode and stood up still ready to fight.
7, Natsu took one both 3rd generation dragon slayers in dragon force mode and made them look like weak sauce.
8. Gildartz is still bad ass!
9. Lets also not forget that Natsu also broke into Sabertooths logings and beat the crap out of a lot of their members.
I personally cant really judge who the strongest fairy tail mage is now. (with the exclusion of Guildartz of course)
