"Not quite," says Ascar. "'Battery' is not quite right, as there is a conscious process behind what they do as well. To be sure, attacking the Ladies-in-Waiting would weaken Adelmo... but not before she would use her power to kill you, and don't count on surprising her.

"I am talented with the Force indeed and I am not modest about that... but I cannot grip many people at once, even less so whilst fighting the power of someone as potent as Adelmo. Don't you see what I did?"

"By attacking her and choking Adelmo the pain went into her followers?"

"Did you somehow directly affect the connection they had?"

"That would mean directly pitting my power against Adelmo, and joined with her Ladies I could not do that.

"The Arnian is right. Their strength comes from their connection, so that has to be the target."

"How can you do that, though?"

"Hmmm that could prove very helpful indeed," Xavier says.

"First you have to understand how it works. That's not easy, and requires a shift in perception. Living among their culture for a time helped."

"It's not impossible... in the fullness of time. If it seems worthwhile.

"Then you need to be empathically open to the minds of others. That is not easy for you people, who often see minds as things to be dominated. Fighting their minds gets you nowhere, being open to them... that has possibilities.

"The final thing to understand is even harder for you."

That is what will confuse you the most, and I hate to say it but the Jedi have the better of it in this regard. Being confrontational gets you nothing. The Force is not like a lightsabre. It is in us, about us, we ARE the Force. The Force is my ally. The Force is not my enemy. The Force helps me."

He gives another one of his smiles.

"And their whole philosophy of the Force- their Harmony... it WANTS to be shared... you see, I could have broken the link and gone one on one with Adelmo, but that was still risky. I did something far better."

"These are all very interesting concepts... so you joined the link"?

"I remember being taught that..." Rianna says.

"What did you do, then?"

"You... connected to them and used the link against them?"

"Yeah a lot of my old lessons as Jedi involved that," Xavier adds.

"Oh yes indeed. I took control of Adelmo's link. I can't choke many separate people. But they were all choking themselves. The silly thing is, they were still the source. All they had to do was stop trying. But Adelmo is incapable of backing down, and they don't have the will to do anything other than what she wants. It's almost too perfect."
