this, which is sad, that guy has done some good rants in the past

I do agree with the double standard part that no one would allow such a thing to be built a Islamic tragedy site, were the religions reversed.
there might be some truth to that, but only because such sites would more likely be located in parts of the world with much less religious tolerance than in America. people might cause a stink, but the US gvt isn't going to stop a church being built, IMHO at least
Something interesting I saw a while ago (Terence Tao shared it on Google Reader)

Hum... this seems to be this guy's main point:
This is just me repeating myself:

The 911 atacks didn't target christianity, they targeted a country's symbols of (very secular) power, not the same as a christian attack on Meca, which would be closer to a muslim attack on the Vatican or some protestant global center of worship. If christian fannatics bombed a bunch of commercial centers in saudi arabia, should christian churches be forbidden in the vicinities? Or more concretelly:Should iraqis as a whole feel offended everytime iraqi christians wanna build a church and atempt to stop them? After all, the entire country has been bombed to hell by an unjustified war of agression launched by a christian nation governed by neocon born again scum for political and economic goals who nevertheless spoke on behalf of god in their speeches and used an image of religious warfare to rally support for the invasion. Just like al qaeda frequently invokes god to justify what are actually politically motivated crimes.
Furthermore, unlike what this moron implies, 911 wasn't an attack from Islam on anything. If the one billion worshipers had it out for you, you'd know it.
By the way, you're not gonna find any expression of religious diversity inside the Vatican City either, EVER, and the italian parliament has even approved laws prohibintg the construction of mosques in Italy as well. I guess that means catholics don't have a right to complain when they are victims of equally unfair descrimination elsewhere.
Both the italian policies and the bannishment of non-muslims from Meca are religiously based discrimination. However, the fact remains that unlike Saudi Arabia, secular states are by definition obliged to secure separation of religion and state. Ultimatelly, the conclusion of his rant, "I'll not be lectured on tolerance by bigots", is meaningless because people defending the mosque being built anywhere the worshippers want it are not supporting islamic discrimination of non-muslims.

Not if it were in the US. I gather that you can't even see ground zero from where it's being built, so I would hardly call it "at" the site.

The ranting Muslim hater on the last page (contrary to inimalist I have not heard him given a good rant, entertaining perhaps, but generally stupid) said that the mosque is apparently at the top floor which can look right at ground zero.
However, he may have lied...
If this is about showing that TINY population of radical jihadists out there that the USA is a land of great tolerance - here, we'll build a mosque at the center of the great tragedy you caused - do you think it would convince them to lay down their arms and accept peaceful co-existence?
I think not.

I was under the impression that tolerance was a virtue by itself, I didn't know its intend was to make Muslim fundamentalists embrace peace.
