pandering

not unless you think the comics are pandering too.

When Wolverine then asks her if she knows where Omega Red is, the Widow replies that he is there in Berlin and, from what she’s heard, he’s desperate. The metal bonded to his body, carbonadium, is killing him somehow. It is corroding and poisoning him. Wolverine realizes that must explain his behavior. Before, Red never would have left him breathing on that rooftop back in New York. The Widow continues that Red wants the synthesizer so he can produce a cleaner sample of the metal, which he then plans to give to a Korean bio-weapons firm in exchange for a cure of some kind.

wrong thread?

I started to tease you, but it's too early in the morning for me to do it effectively. You're ultimately right, of course -- that was intended to get to a poster named Stiltman in one of the Doctor Octopus threads on the versus boards today ...

One of the most powerful characters in the DCU? The hell? AM has never been painted in that sort of light, nor should he be imo.

Johns just has a hard-on for AM now, so we're destined to see some hardcore wankage(ala Barry and Hal.)

That's why I don't think he meant power in terms of power level alone. Nor do I think he was taking in to account people like the Spectre and such.

I believe he meant among the "hero" characters.
Not including villains and characters like Spectre, Nabu, Gods, P.Stranger, etc

I wasn't even thinking of the higher end cosmic characters and such. Even if you just compare Arthur to some of the more powerful earth-based heroes in pre-Flashpoint continuity, such as: Superman, Flash, Hal, Kyle, John, Alan, Citizen Steel, Power Girl, Dianna, Firestorm, Captain Atom, J'onn, Shazam, Superboy/girl, etc. etc. etc., he was never portrayed remotely near their level on a consistent basis. If you then consider all of the villains/rogues on earth, as well as every space-based hero/baddie in old DC, poor Arthur drops much further down the power chart.

Point: while it might be cool for fans that Johns thinks so highly of AM, it is a bit confusing to me because he certainly isn't basing his opinion on previously established continuity... But hey, he's Geoff Johns... He can do whatever the phuck he wants.

Yes but Galan don't forget this IS a NEW continuity.
Everything is up for remaking/changing including power levels, and this seems to be the case here.

That's why I said:

I honestly don't agree.

You believe Arthur was on par with the 'elite' class of characters on a consistent basis? I can't say I can agree, tbh. He's got some good feats, don't get me wrong... But I never saw anything from him [consistently] that made me think he was in Superman's league.

You guys could always go on a pre-reboot AM vs threads binge and see how many wins people think he takes from people like Superman or Wonder Woman and keep going down until he takes a majority from someone 😛

Not in terms of his power level, no. Like I said, he was a high meta pre reboot. He was still able, though, to make people like Superman and the League back off when he had to, because his "power" was more than just a combat thing.

Arthur has gotten a massive amp since the reboot, so if that's all Johns is talking about, then I can see where he's going.

It's not like he's Superman, though.

Yeah that's all I'm saying. In old DC, Arthur was well below Superman's class. In fact, if you factored in ALL heroes/villains in pre-Flashpoint continuity(with the cap being high herald level), I doubt very highly that Arthur would make the top 100 most powerful. Nothing against him, but he was simply never touted as THAT powerful of a character consistently.

That's why Johns commenting that Arthur IS one of the most powerful characters in the DCU is somewhat baffling to me--- as it is a complete 180 from his previous history. I don't care either way, though... I actually think this is a good thing for Arthur.

Well he has gotten a significant amp since the reboot (though one could argue that it had started during Brightest Day). Before it, he was a level or two below the likes of J'onn (even if he showed the strength and durability to actually last a little against people of his calibre). Is it a leap? Sure, but if we see him fist-fighting with Superman in todays issue, things are going to have to be seen differently...

Oh I'm not saying previous continuity holds any bearing whatsoever on Nu52 Arthur. It doesn't. They are 2 completely different characters, really. I was just commenting on the vast power difference since the reboot, is all.

Tbh, I hope Arthur stomps the shit out of Supes. /shrug

😂

TBH, i tend to think of it as a combination of a power difference and a portrayal difference. In the Peter David/Abnett and Lanning days, they went on and on about how strong Arthur was, but rarely showed it.

Johns is the equivalent of a wolf-whistling cheerleader shouting "LOOK AT ME AND WHAT I'M DOING!" with it.

I think this sums it up better for the preboot version.
Aquaman unlike most of the other big 7 didn't have so many guest appearances in other comics compared to the others.
