DCU gets remade - all books are #1s, Geoff Johns and Jim Lee on Justice League, more

I was talking to the other half recently about Aquaman, and I had wondered out loud if we'd get to see how he gets around. Leaping tall buildings? Exactly what I was hoping for.

Boston is the weird thing though. I can't remember if Aquaman was based out of it before, but again, we were talking about it and we both agreed that Boston was a good idea due to the waterways. Two weeks ago.

This is the third time the new 52 has done something that had greatly mirrored an rp i'm in. God-dammit.

Not sure what the big deal about Aquaman is. I read comics, I already know Aquaman isn't a joke, I'm not the Family Guy audience, I didn't need to be slapped across the face for 20 pages with people thinking Aquaman was a schmuck to be convinced about something I already knew...

/shrug

it's more about Aquaman dealing with that attitude than the reader, tbh.

Aquaman dealing with the attitude was merely the vehicle used to assuage the negative opinions of new readers who think Aquaman is the butt of a joke. Since I was already aware of this, it was unnecessary and heavy handed. Not to mention I don't buy for a second the the populace of the DCU has the same opinion of Aquaman as someone who's only experience with the character is from an episode of Southpark or Family Guy.

To each's own I guess.

Except that people like you and me are the minority. Aquaman still, for the large part, bears the brunt of the Superfriends to a large extent. Something like this was always going to be necessary; Peter David touched on it, but never to the extent Johns is going to.

If you don't like the comic, fair enough though.

Fair enough, and so far it does seem that DC has been successful in bringing in new readers, whether or not they are primarily #1 issue collectors remains to be seen.

I guess I'll just say that as someone who already liked Aquaman the issue was focused towards me.

Just read Firestorm #1, and I doubt I'll ever do so again. It was just horrible, imo.

However I, Vampire was excellent in every sense of the word. Great artwork, great premise, great characters, great plot. It was by FAR the best "New 52" issue I've personally read (and there was absolutely nothing "Twilighty" about it, btw.) I will definitely be following this.

Something does come to mind, though.

Ganthet "chose" Kyle in the retelling of his origin because of his ability to overcome great fear, something which was explicitly shown to be not the case prior to this reboot. In fact, that was a running plot point with Kyle; whether or not he was chosen or just happened to be in the right place in the right time. He was never a fearless Green Lantern, which was what helped make him unique.

The way I interpret that line, is not that Kyle was fearless, because how can you overcome what you don't have, but that he felt great fear, but still fought on. In fact, that's what was wrong with the Green Lantern movie- Hal Jordan WAS fearless! But because they didn't like that, they stole Kyle's character progression, and all around characterization, and thrust it onto Hal's backstory. They should have just let Reynolds play Kyle, but whatever.

They used the retconned Hal Jordan origin that Johns wrote; they didn't steal Kyle's.

I, Vampire was awesome. Was the DCU run this good?

I enjoyed Aquaman but they should have spent less time showing us why he isn't just a joke and focusing on the story. Superman was also good imo.

Screw Aquaman. All-Star Western was hella good!!

I was really hoping Hawkman would be good. Damn. T_T

What happened to Phillip Tan? I never thought he was great but his X-Force work was a huge leap forward, this is two giant leaps back.

i enjoyed his art for the most part.

damn, just read i vampire. definitely in my top 3 for the month. my top 3 for the week are vampire, voodoo, and blackhawks.

i liked I, Vampire a lot.. i look forward to the next issue

Alright, time for impressions on all of this week's releases. Spoilers incoming

All-Star Western:
Really good storytelling. They nailed that. I've never really liked Jonah Hex, but I like what's going on in old Gotham. While it's written really well, I don't expect to keep up with it because it's just not my thing.

Aquaman:
Loved it. The story, the art, everything. It wasn't a title I was excited about before today, but it's up there with the best of the New 52 #1s. I understand people saying that the "Aquaman is a joke" angle was overdone, but I don't agree. Aquaman is a joke, he pretty much always has been. He's been a JLA member, but has always been the most useless and is grumpy and pissy all the time. He was an entirely unlikeable character. I've never cared for him and I've always thought he was a joke, so it's refreshing to see Johns turn that around and shove it in my face.
What they did here was just make him badass. He even looks cool for the first time in a long time. I don't think the he's-a-joke thing is going to last beyond this issue, so I personally don't think it was overdone.

Batman TDK:
Lot of similarities with Batman #1, but not as good in any of them. It was ok. No further comments.

Blackhawks:
Meh. It was alright, I guess. Not going to follow. One of the weaker titles so far.

The Flash:
It was ok. Didn't get me excited about anything.

The Fury of Firestorm:
Wow. How terrible could it be. Not only did they butcher Firestorm in all the worst ways (did they not expect fan backlash?), but they brought in racial tension out of literally nothing. Then the bad guys come in and shoot the football coach in the head, they become Firestorms, and they fight each other over it and a stupid f'ing article while ignoring the guys who just murdered a man in front of them. Worst. Ever.

Green Lantern - New Guardians:
It was...ok. Mostly just a retelling of Kyle's story, but with an added line by Ganthet ("You have the ability to overcome great fear"😉 that I didn't care for. That's not who Kyle is/was. He wasn't chosen the same way as all the other Green Lanterns, and that's what made him unique. He's lost that now, and I don't like it.

I, Vampire:
Um...I read some people here raving about it before I got to it, and I was actually expecting it to be a really good read. I didn't care for it. It just didn't make sense...doesn't fit with the DC continuity as I see it/want it to be.

Justice League Dark:
Hmm....I'm trying to formulate thoughts about this one, and I don't have any yet. I'll follow up later.

Savage Hawkman:
See JL Dark

Superman:
Interesting move destroying the Daily Planet and making a new building. I could be reading into it a little too much, but it seemed like a parallel of the reboot itself. Pretty good book.

Teen Titans:
I thought it was ok. I always like to see the backstory behind forming the team whenever possible, so I like that they're starting there. I think it'll tie in well with Superboy. There's a little too much teen going on, but then I've never been a TT fan.

Voodoo:
Ok...Another comic with lots of boobs. I'm not against boobs, but it seems like DC is deliberately trying to push the sex angle. I think that can lead down a bad/boring road fast. Not really sure where we're headed with this one.

At least Voodoo is done by Ron Marz, who did the excellent and tasteful Witchblade run. So I'd expect Voodoo to have sexuality, but handle it well, unlike some other books.

JL Dark is my second favorite book of the relaunch so far (first being Demon Knights).

I was starting to like JL Dark, but then I read this line,
Superman: "Teeth? Filthy flying teeth!"

And it was just like...wow...really?

Superman actually used the word "filthy" ?
