As pointed out during the trial Zimmerman would have been trying to resist so the impacts wouldn't have been as strong as intended. I'd still call that bashing

I watched Zimmerman (in the police interview, iirc) say "my head felt like it was going to explode" and demonstrate with his hands/body how he was being viciously slammed. His claim there along with the pics is why I call BS.

Dude got his ass kicked by a kid; couldn't handle it, so he raged and killed the guy. That's my opinion.

Everything Zimmerman said is clearly a lie unless you honestly think some kid would "VIOLENTLY MURDER A COMPLETE STRANGER WITH HIS BAREHANDS FOR NO DISCERNIBLE REASON". Any defense of Zimmerman based on his account is built on insane leaps of logic and basic motivations that make no sense.

His account stinks even before the fact that his wounds were obviously not life threatening.

Was there ever an official statement about if the wounds on the back of his head were likely to have been caused that way?

Just because you don't like the "account" of what happened doesn't make it less accurate. Just because you don't believe Martin could have overpowered Zimmerman, doesn't make it less accurate. As I said, his story is obviously complete horseshit. He said he was looking for what street he was on and was walking back to the car when Trayvon ambushed him. If thats true then why was Trayvon's body on a completely different street from Zimmerman's car:
