Rumor has it Fox kept interfering and cutting back on the budget.
People generally say the first half of the movie is pretty decent, and that was all Trank apparently.
All I keep hearing from people who have seen it is that this film had enough elements, potential, acting chops etc. to be really good, but it just doesn't come together and the results are underwhelming. I was going to go watch this in the cinema when it got released here, but now I am having second thoughts.
So I saw it and I can say that the beginning of the movie was entertaining. I liked the interdimensional spin on the origin of their powers though I thought the members themselves could have done more. Doom aside the biggest problems with the movie were the finale and ultimately nothing really happening in the film.

That was the exact problem with the 2005 Tim Story Origin film.
Nothing happened. Except they get powers and fight Doom at the end (who also got powers but went mad).
Changing the tone, the characters ages and the experiment from investigating a space anomaly to investigating inter-dimensional teleportation really isn't much of a difference.
So they've just made the same damn film with the same damn faults and the same misuse of Doom AGAIN. It's the 3rd time in a row they've had the FF fight Doom in the end. Third time in a row they've Misused Doom.
They better give up the rights now, or I might just boycott X-Men as well out of spite.
For anyone who's got the time, here's a really informative summary of what exactly went wrong with this film. Watching it, you can kind of see how both parties (Trank and Fox) are at fault.

Just got back from watching this movie. My buddy left the theater went down stairs to go play some old arcade games in the lobby. My expectations were low and I was still disappointed. Couldn't relate to any of the characters. Doom looked horrible. his face looked liked cheap plastic. and the movie didn't really start until the last 10 minutes of the flick.
Wont go any further, I don't want to spoil it for anyone who choses to watch it. On opening night there were only 9 people in the theater and 2 left half way through it including my buddy.
just my 2 cents.
The first 40 minutes is them just going over how the machine comes into being, and the acting is horrible. Nothing happens at all essentially until they go back to get Doom, and even then its completely unbelievable how they beat him. The movie is crap from the acting to the unbelievable fight scene. The Doom in the film is even less powerful than the one for the previous films.
It's gonna Flop. Yay!

I hope Marvel have this back within the year.
I'm not going to watch this. I gave Fox the benefit of the doubt, but refuse to support their continuous butchering of this franchise. FF are done for now, even Marvel won't be able to pick up the pieces. But at least Marvel can do Silver Surfer and Galactus justice.
Can't wait for Thor to face off against Surfer on the big screen!
