So I only played the games, none of that reading the books and other non game stuff. Do I actually need to have engaged in that other stuff to get the story?
The only thing that will make any difference, I think, is if you read Asunder, which introduces you to Cole (a companion in the game), and details much of what happened between the end of 2 and the start of Inquisition.
Not a huge deal though; they just provide a bit of background. You've played and finished the first two, so you'll be fine.

Only works on PC I think, but:

literally all I had to do was sign up, which gave me the 500 points required.

Hmm I'm torn between this and SUnset Overdrive.I am a Bioware fan, so it sounds like a no brainer, but then again SO is an Xbone exclusive and seems to be good . FML
GET THIS!

So I was just in Orlais for an interesting story mission... Damn, this game is good. You can really tell that they really put their heart and soul in to the RPG aspects of this game. No half-assing it at all.

Is it better then Origins in your opinion?
I don't want to say definitely yes, but the fact that I think it's possible says a lot. I only replayed Origins a couple of months ago (if even that), and so far the only real complaints I have about this game are the PC controls being a bit weak, and the romance choices for me (as a straight man).
The story is great. The characters for the most part are great (even Cullen, who I never gave a shit about before, is awesome). I only started playing this Thursday, and I've clocked up over 38 hours. If it's not better than Origins, it's in the same league.
Game has been pretty good so far. Although, unsurprisingly, the combat is a bit mediocre.

DA 3 is easily better IMO.

Don't think they are very good, or wanted more options?
They're... Okay. Cassandra is decent enough (though I did watch the movie, so I know more about what she went through), and Josephine is simply all right. The past two games had better options, imo.
Could have done with more options, tbh.

It's like they wanted to cater to the LGBT community sooooo much they didn't really care about straight guys. I'd rather everyone be Heraldsexual than having a very small window for who you can romance based on gender and race. Like Vivienne. I would have wrecked that.
Honestly, i'm not sure that's entirely fair. Well, bar the Vivienne part; I'd romance the shit out of her.
As far as catering goes, I honestly don't agree.
Straight men, yes, get 2 romance options (Josephine and Cassandra).
But if you take race-gating in to account, it's not that big a gap unless you're bisexual, who would naturally have more choices anyway.
Gay men get 2.
Straight women that are human get 3. 4 if they're an elf. qunari/dwarves get 2.
Lesbians get 2.
So I can't say I agree, even if I think Gaider isn't always the most sympathetic when it comes to straight players.
I just wish the women were more... Interesting, I guess. I like a girl with a bit of fire and wit. Someone that's a bit cheeky. Josephine, even for an Antivan, is too prim and proper, and Cassandra is almost like a badly tempered Alistair.
Even Scout Harding. Why not her? She's fun.
