MOS is at $525 million worldwide; it will probably fall just short of $600 million when it's all over. Despite some flaws in the film, it's a pretty successful reboot overall. It's the kind of needed do-over Batman got in 2005.
Far as this competition goes...Iron Man is arguably the biggest single movie superhero in the world right now. He's elbowed past Spider Man and Batman for this distinction.

Why do people care how much money they make? Are you guys getting a cut or something?
IronMan films have all been good, with the latest one being the best of the franchise so far.
MoS was dull and stupid. Had promise, drew you in and then sucked for the most part.
Regardless how much it makes, it's not a very good film.
Needs to make enough money for a sequel.

Eh? It's going to easily make more than 600 mil.

The Superman character just doesn't make for a good movie vehicle imo.
Make him radically different, pit him against a hostile world and drop the whole "god" stuff, then you might have a more mature character develop.
Also would help to have a decent actor playing the role, most of my friends called him "Man of Wood"... And not because of Phwoar-faora whatever her name is.
Even the kid from Smallville delivered a more nuanced performance as Clark.

Does that matter? If it's a dull film, why look forward to a dull franchise? The Superman character just doesn't make for a good movie vehicle imo.

That's your opinion. MOS was very well done and it seems it had decent WOM, which is why it's making some decent money.

If you enjoy buildings being destroyed over and over again. For Superman to let his own stepfather command him not to save him was awful.
Lets not forget the main villain who repeatedly got his butt handed to him by a guy who never fought even once in his entire life and a damn scientist for cripes sake.

Guess Zod must have been stuck behind a desk for most of his career.. anyway in the final fight I think he really just wanted to die. If Zod was made too competent a rookie supes would not have been able to win in the end tbh.
Still a great movie.

And Batman destroyed Spider-Man at the box office. MOS destroyed Captain America at the box office. So I guess DC is on another level right?
Also I wonder how successful Iron Man will be when Downey's not on board anymore.

MOS will beat Thor, Cap, Spider-Man, Hulk, etc... at the Box office. Iron Man 3 and probably Thor 2 will benefit from the Avengers, but it's all about having that buildup. Something WB might be doing.

Superman is an icon and for IronMan to come out of nowhere and built into a box office juggernaut shows how different the dynamic is nowadays.
IronMan destroyed an icon. The sad thing is the only really good dc films came to a conclusion in Batman.
Who's destroying who? When were Superman and Captain America in direct competition at the box office? This is becoming a flame thread.
Superman once had the superhero movie landscape to himself, and as one of the biggest & most recognizable of heroes in the world. This has been about trying to return to his former position, but he has company at the summit now.
What's impressive about the very successful film debuts of Thor, Captain America and especially Iron Man, is they had virtually no pre-established history in live action (Cap had a 1940's serial, a couple of 1970's TV movies and a direct to video feature) and little in the way of animated appearances, especially compared to Spider Man, the X-Men and many DC heroes. It's also what's made Hulk a puzzle, with the mixed reaction to two (very different) film treatments. Prior to the release of the first X-Men movie, he would have been the second most known Marvel hero behind Spider Man to non-comic fans, because of the long running TV show. Only another film with him will tell if the Avengers finally solved it for him.
So comparing heroes with longer film histories to ones who are just beginning is apples and oranges. But Captain America virtually equaled the gross of Batman Begins and managed to overcome the use of the word 'America' in overseas markets, and Thor outperformed Superman Returns, which was supposed to be the two decades long return of the big blue schoolboy.
And with the the exception of Hulk, all of the Marvel Shared Universe films have been better regarded critically than MOS (though I like MOS, overall.)
Right now, the most popular heroes worldwide are Iron Man, with Batman and Spider Man jostling for second place.
