PS4 isn't backwards compatible as well. Either people have a major issue with MS as a company or this is typical gamer bullshit where they complain about everything until it comes out and they buy it because it has games.I'm annoyed that it's not backwards compatible (so that's now 4 consoles I will have to hook up to my TV to play my older games) but XBOX One isn't the only next-gen that doesn't have it.
Also, it's called FEATURES...they are not taking away the ability to play video games. I don't understand why people ***** about features in a device. If the features suck, that's different but they just announced what the device can do outside of playing games.
Here's how the system works: when you buy an Xbox One game, you'll get a unique code that you enter when you install that game. You'll have to connect to the Internet in order to authorize that code, and the code can only be used once. Once you use it, that game will then be linked to your Xbox Live account. "It sits on your harddrive and you have permission to play that game as long as you’d like," Harrison said.Other users on the console will be able to play that game as well, Harrison said. So you don't need to buy multiple games per family. "With the built-in parental controls of the system it is shared amog the users of the device," he said.
But what if you want to bring a game disc to a friend's house and play there? You'll have to pay a fee—and not just some sort of activation fee, but the actual price of that game—in order to use a game's code on a friend's account. Think of it like a new game, Harrison said.
No backwards compatability is such a huge mistake in my book, it essentially makes it so that I will not bother with buying XboxOne untill way into next year, as I simply have such a huge X360 backlog to play through.
And the only reason the PS4s lack of backwards compatability isn't such a big deal for me is twofold:
1 - The PS3 is in great shape still, while my X360 is positively dying.
2 - I have so few PS3 games, I only use the PS3 for PS3 exclusives, all multiplatforms go on the 360.
So, not impressed yet Microsoft.
So microsoft's plan is to ruin game/beer nights, rip people off for every penny and destroy the 2nd hand games industry which many people rely on as the only way to afford to play games and which also keep most high street game retailers alive.
All this cos they desperately need the money cos once Google comes up with a widespread vastly cheaper alternative to Microsoft office then Microsoft will have absolutely no revenue stream.
The loyal xbox base are effectively being punished for the failures of windows 8 and microsoft's disasterous attempt to entire the mobile phone market.
I can see this being yet another self hammered nail in their coffin.

Also soon as this new Xbox is released will they cease making 360 games?......like what they did with the first Xbox.
I wouldn't worry. I get the feeling Microsoft will be forced to go back to giving the 360 their full attention once the Xbox One comes out and gets sales poorer than the Wii U's.
I read that they will continue to support the 360 after the ... Ones... release, similar to the PS2 while the PS3 was first released.
As for the used-games market, I coudn't care less if they went under. A used game at GameStop costs more than just ordering a brand new one online, at least here in Norway. And new games at GS are always 30-40% more expensive than any other retailer, so good riddance.
Not sure how I feel about backwards compatibility. While I really don't play games over and over if I already squeezed the life out of them (achievements), there are games I play over and over with my friends (MW2, Halo) which I would want to use on the Xbox1.
Then there's Gamestop which will probably take a hit because of this, which I don't mind. I stopped trading my games on GS(I use Ebay) because is such a rip off. new games $60-$65, used games $50-$55. Trade in value for a game one month, $25-$30. Older than that, u'll be lucky to get $20.
What I wonder is, If I buy a game for regular price, then sell it, will the person I sold it to pay the same exact amount to install it or less since it's a second hand game now?

Basically says, "we haven't revealed how used games will work but people can buy and resell their old games", also, "there is no fee to play games on your friends console".
MS has really screwed up their messaging for the new console. They should of waited until everybody was on board.
Backward compatibility sucks but PS4 doesn't have it, the 360 could only do a certain amount of games and PS3 took that feature out. I remember there was discussion about how backwards compatibility is something everybody wants but the data of new consoles sold didn't back it up.

Looked at the prices for an X360 250 GB Slim, and it's not that pricey. Guess my solution will be to get one of those when my 360 dies and keep it around whenever I want to replay Mass Effect etc in the future.
To tell you the truth, most people I know personally (small group I know) usually play the old games on the older consoles even if the next gen system can do it.
Also, I re-read that link I posted and I missed the part, "you can play the games on friends console while signed into your profile".
So basically, if you want to play the game on your friends console, you have to sign into your profile or pay a fee. So how Steam works, and a lot of other services.
I wonder if that fee allows the friend to get access to a new game, or just playing it. It would be pretty damn sweet if the fee gives your friend the game.....I highly doubt it.
I'd like to see some type of 4k support at least in the future. Love that "the one" has a blu ray player, didn't think they'd do that for obvious reasons. I kinda wanted the kinect to be built in, oh well, and for the design to be a little rounder sleeker and more futuristic instead of looking like a modern lookin' 3DO. Controllers look nice. I wish they would've shown more gameplay than fmv's.
I feel good about both systems. not the WiiU though. Waiting for them to be a software company so that ps and xbox can get their Nintendo exclusives. It's only a matter of time now, I feel.

As ever, this is subject to much revision due to the confusion of information, but my understanding is- yes, it does give them the game... but the fee is the full price of the game anyway. So all you do is save them the trouble of downloading it.
The big thing this kills is lending other people your game, but as you say, this is how Steam has worked for a long time, and we have new generations of people growing up on smartphone purchases tied to accounts. This is just the way things are going; games as physical commodities you can 'lend' are a dying concept.
I'll be interested to see how this all works out. I know Microsoft are taking bad press in the hardcore community right now, but I have this feeling there may well be a market for what they are selling. I also quite like the idea that we have consoles taking totally different approaches to the market. It always seemed a bit wasteful when consoles butted heads over the same ground.
