No one wants it to fail. Having just the PS4 and Wii U doing there own things would suck. You need competition in a market for it to truly thrive.
But no-one wants it to succeed either. I want it to sell enough to keep afloat and 'competitive', but to fail enough that they buck up their ideas and learn their lesson, as Sony did with the PS3.

If there were no xbox the ps4 would have a fate 10x's worse than.
I can't even imagine the complete advantage Sony' would take here as a monopoly while shatting hard and happily on their "loyal" consumers simultaneously.

That's a good point. This is why competition is important. We need Xbox to fail this gen and Sony to succeed so Xbox will try harder in 5-7 years.
We win when there is competition. We lose when there isn't.
The NES cost $200-$250 when it was released.
$250 in 1985 is $540.27 today. It outsold their "competition" by a ginormous margin. There was practically no competitor.
So when people complain about the price of this gen, I just point them to the virtual monopoly Nintendo had.
The Wii U is $299 or $349 for the deluxe version. That's less expensive to the equivalent value of the dollar in 1985. I believe that comes to $138.82 in 1985 dollars. If the NES was released for around that price, it would have been...absurdly cheap, comparatively.

I was talking about the PS3 with somebody and he mentioned the price of it when released. In Canada, the premium version was $700 not including tax. I forgot about the actual price.
The Canadian Dollar is valued less than the American Dollar. So it will cost more in Canada. However, not that much more. He was ripped off if he paid $700 CD.

At the time the exchange rate peaked at about 1.2 (1.182 to be exact)
Considering the PlayStation sold for 600USD, he'd actually have saved some money by paying with Canadian Dollars.

I could not find a source that said the PS3 sold for $600, anywhere (in the US, that is).
Ugh, I need to clarify, again, that this does not include shit like E-bay. Authorized retailers that sold it at the MSRP. Not KB-Toys that sold it for $800 or some shit.

The 60GB model (which I assume he meant with premium, although it did have HDMI) was 599$. Is that incorrect?

My god, I sincerely hope this is just another case of "we don't know just yet how it'll work for sure"
It's really stupid. People outside the US are legitimately buying their products, you can't just pirate LIVE, you can't have LIVE with a pirated console. Why would you lock out consumers like that? I really don't know how big the market is, but in the case of Latin-America every sale counts toward the US sales, and now the only country supported is Brazil where a console price is twice as much as the US, and you can't really do much about since it's that way because of the tax the Brazilian government has on gambling machines.
This is all just baffling.
And there's absolutely no reason for this to happen, The infrastructure already in place allows for anyone to buy games digitally. I understand it's not the same with movies and TV shows since they are not owners, producers or publisher of that content, but it's not the same with games.
And don't come with that Cloud excuse, cuz nobody buys it.
I'll be lying if I said I wasn't a little bit pleased when that Orth guy got fired, but it's quite the hypocrisy he's out of a job for essentially following M$ policy and PR guidelines (assuming he's still out of a job) 😬

Sony Fanboys aside, I don't think people want M$ to fail, I certainly don't. The 360 owns the US, but now they're flinging crap left and right, their own us customers are the one suffering.
People want draconian policies to fail, For M$ to back off from it. That's what they want. If you don't give that to people, they will look elsewhere. If they wanted to cut off GAMESTOP and the "used game hurts developers" bullsh*t, they could have gone all digital, why didn't they? why don't they? lower the price of a digital copies since it doesn't have all the manufacture and retailers fees attached. Just back off the always online sh*t.
PS3 did not fail this gen, they even outsold the 360 by a slight margin so far, but is a farcry from their 2006 attitude, and it's mostly because of M$. The same needs to happen next gen.

Yes, I did not find it sold for that much, anywhere, when it was released. At least in the US.

Maybe less than 5% of gamers are saying stuff like this...but that's still a lot of people.

Well, I wasn't there, but that seem to be the retail prices quoted. From your experience, were they cheaper? How much for the two models?
The US MSRPs were cheaper and at places like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and the like, it was sold at the MSRP. I think some retailers that ripped off customers (KB Toys, at the time, now out of business, iirc) took advantage of the rarity of the PS3 and sold it for $100-$200 over MSRP.
