Current Gen Console Discussions (PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch (Pro?) OFFICIAL THREAD

I wouldn't really call it a lot, not yet anyways. Only 5 or so cases that I know of, at least one of which has been attributed to user error and doing stupid things like removing the hard drive while the system was in use.

We'll see how bad it really is when the console actually launches. Hopefully it's not too bad. I won't lie, though. I'm a bit nervous, as my PS4 is currently in route, really hope it's not a brick.

Sounds like a rough start for PS4. A lot of systems are bricking, and apparently the software isn't up to snuff. Presentation isn't very good. Luckily, that's something that can be fixed through patches. The PS4 has potential for the future, but it's nothing great yet.

How do get that LOTS of systems are bricking from two articles?

Yeah, it's probably not a system wide issue.

But the release date hasn't hit yet and 5 cases have been reported, that's not something I would want to see.

Ya, but 5 out of the early copies that have been put out is still a worrying number. I hope its not though. I've got a pretty gaming intensive day planned with my buddy for tomorrow.

I've read other articles besides those two. Other people who won early PS4s and review sites are reporting the same problem IGN has (the HDMI output doesn't output). Yes, 'a lot' wasn't the best choice of words, but its still a pretty worrisome problem and it seems to be the same problem for everyone who's experiencing it, so that cant be isolated from launch consoles.

It's also worth noting that IGNs console bricked after they got a good amount of gaming time on it, so it may not be an instant problem either. On the other hand, there have been reports of peoples consoles being bricked on reception. We'll have to see how this all pans out tonight and tomorrow though.

A console shouldn't brick for at least 3 years.

If IGN had it for a few weeks, getting bricked is bad.

I few years back when I was steeped in electronic engineering research (not by choice...damn homework), I posted about acceptable failure rates. I could probably search for and find that post but, basically, 2% is generally an acceptable failure rate within 2 years...maybe. I'm recalling (pun!) from memory.

That means no more than 2 out of 100 consoles should experience catastrophic failure, after 2 years of intended* operation.

I would also like to note that both the PS3 and the XBox 360 greatly exceeded the 2% failure rate (after the first 2 years of their launches) for their first 2 years. Both of them failed the standard and performed, as some professionals would assess, very poorly.

However, I would also note that both of them took corrective actions in their hardware designs and dropped below** the failure rate standard. Someone posted a link somewhere that confirmed that...not sure when and who but I remember the link, the Slim being very reliable, yadda yadda.

As has been the case for at least the last 3 generations (I am calling the XBox One and PS4 "this gen", now), you should wait for hardware improvements if you don't want the hassle of hardware failures to bother you. I did that for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 and they are both still in my living room, functioning quite well. 🙂

You'll have to get geeky and do some research to see which hardware version are which (usually, you can tell by the Serial Number AFTER you figure out which hardware versions are in which batches). But I do remember that they both had versioning controls so you could tell which console "batch" you got. That allowed the consumer to see if they would be more likely to get the RRoD (For 360) or the HDD failure (For PS3) when they had this early life-cycle failures.

So, if this shit bothers you, do more research and wait 3-6 months for the next hardware version batch to be released that will fix some of the hardware failure issues.

*"Intended" is a very important word because using your PS4 as a weight scale or a coaster for your Monster drink is NOT intended use. lulz...you'd be surprised.

**It seems backwards but exceeded the standard means you are failing too often. Dropping below the standard means you are doing better than the bar.

Sony is saying the current rate of affected systems is .4%. If true, that's very good.

While I think the "bricked" issue is not an issue but........how could they know that yet? Sale date is tomorrow. Of course there hasn't been any issues regarding system failure when the 99% of the consumers haven't used them yet.

That's actually really good and the engineers should be proud as **** about that result.

However, it hasn't been 2 years, yet. They could start failing like crazy in 3-6 months.

I'll be patient and wait to buy the new consoles. I'll let you guys do my dirty work. mwhahaha evillaugh

I don't know how they know that but their quality control processes might have been able to give them a decent sample to apply to the population (I am just guessing).

They're referring specifically to this current issue, I think.

Maybe. It depends on what "ship to date" means.

I still don't think it's an issue.

Yeah it's not sounding like it. There's now been 7 or so confirmed cases out of around 5000 consoles that are already out in the wild.

Doesn't sound too bad.

Smas, you're getting an Xbone at launch, yeah?

Yeah, I am. Hopefully I don't regret it hahaha.

I'm looking forward to playing Forza and I might pick up Dead Rising 3 (if it's good).

I'm probably picking up the PS4 once Naughty Dog releases a new game.

Honestly, the Xbone looks like it's going to have the better launch, as far as games go. Lots of potentially good exclusives, where as the PS4 only basically has Killzone.

I doubt you'll regret it, looks like it's going to be a solid system.

Speaking of exclusives, apparently Titanfall was believed by the developers to be only on the Xbox for a limited time until their publisher, EA, went behind their backs and made it's stay permanent. EA likes to milk both sides so this is odd. Microsoft must've bribed them big.

Yep. I don't really care, I don't think Titanfall looks all that great, and if I want to get it I will just grab it for the PC. Interesting what EA is doing, though.

Bribed is such a naughty word. Both companies do the same thing.

I'll probably pick up Titanfall on the PC as well.

I'm waiting for the Second son Bundle before I get a ps4.

Well, that might be sooner than you think. The new Uncharted has already been announced.

So far, haven't really heard of many other cases of bricked consoles. The PSN has crashed, but that should be back up relatively quickly.
