I few years back when I was steeped in electronic engineering research (not by choice...damn homework), I posted about acceptable failure rates. I could probably search for and find that post but, basically, 2% is generally an acceptable failure rate within 2 years...maybe. I'm recalling (pun!) from memory.
That means no more than 2 out of 100 consoles should experience catastrophic failure, after 2 years of intended* operation.
I would also like to note that both the PS3 and the XBox 360 greatly exceeded the 2% failure rate (after the first 2 years of their launches) for their first 2 years. Both of them failed the standard and performed, as some professionals would assess, very poorly.
However, I would also note that both of them took corrective actions in their hardware designs and dropped below** the failure rate standard. Someone posted a link somewhere that confirmed that...not sure when and who but I remember the link, the Slim being very reliable, yadda yadda.
As has been the case for at least the last 3 generations (I am calling the XBox One and PS4 "this gen", now), you should wait for hardware improvements if you don't want the hassle of hardware failures to bother you. I did that for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 and they are both still in my living room, functioning quite well. 🙂
You'll have to get geeky and do some research to see which hardware version are which (usually, you can tell by the Serial Number AFTER you figure out which hardware versions are in which batches). But I do remember that they both had versioning controls so you could tell which console "batch" you got. That allowed the consumer to see if they would be more likely to get the RRoD (For 360) or the HDD failure (For PS3) when they had this early life-cycle failures.
So, if this shit bothers you, do more research and wait 3-6 months for the next hardware version batch to be released that will fix some of the hardware failure issues.
*"Intended" is a very important word because using your PS4 as a weight scale or a coaster for your Monster drink is NOT intended use. lulz...you'd be surprised.
**It seems backwards but exceeded the standard means you are failing too often. Dropping below the standard means you are doing better than the bar.
