I think he's too straightforward in his approach. I don't want to say "generic," but... Star Wars, as a space opera, is super-dramatic and epic in both writing and direction.
Abrams has to get in touch with his inner Shakespeare. For some reason, I think Kenneth Brannagh might have been a better choice.

Thor is one of the reasons I'd pick Brannagh. It's not the best comic movie I've ever seen, but it's very good and captures a lot of Star Wars elements very well IMHO.

JJ Abrams wants to get back to the "Grittier" stuff from the OT.
I think he's trying. He really is. But the issue is he cannot create that same sense of mystery and awe that the OT had because the OT was a relatively new "thing." We've talked about this, before...so I'll stop beating this horse whose vital signs have been non-existent for a while.
