Balrog was beaten to death by Gandalf. Saruman bested Gandalf in under ten mins.

Smaug has greater feats, greater size, greater intelligence, and can fly. Balrog has been known to plummet.

Balrog died first. Gandalf won. Gandalf also came back stronger.

Smaug decimated the dwarven stronghold. One tail whip should pretty much end the poor Balrog.

Gandalf killed the Balrog first. He won.

Smaug decimated plenty of other dwarves. Balrog couldn't keep anyone dead.

Smaug made two entire races flee.

That is speculation. Gandalf can't tank the gold attack since Saruman hurt him with minor bruising attacks before.

Balrog only caused Gandalf to come back stronger after he killed the weak feeb.

Smaug wins. Gandalf is afraid of dragons and has not killed any. The guy chokes when the dwarves ask him.

Wizard ran away from the quest of Smaug. Coward. Gandalf basically said, "I got this" to the Fotr. He knew in the end he's receive a powerup from the nap he'd take after crushing the mad dog.

Balrog's best feat was falling while being mounted by the geriatic wizard. Gandalf straddled the cur.
