Interesting. The movie never actually does this and the trailers and promotional material advertised him as the Vader-esque badass we see in the first half. His character is in fact a complete surprise if you go in just on that. This leads me to think that you were actually built up by us in the SW forum discussing it and you went in expecting more than it was.
In another life, you might have made a good detective. But definitely not in this one: Abrams and Driver have been talking about how three dimensional and complex Kylo Ren is for weeks/months now.

If I was being nasty I'd say you went in predisposed to judge him harshly due to the favorable comparisons with the PT characters but naw.
Well we both know it's the only reason you like TFA lmao. Speaking of which, I'm waiting for your substantive and impassioned explanation as to how
Spoiler::
the desire to be an active participant in mass murder and war crimes is more sympathetic than the desire to save loved ones from death

how Kylo Ren's desire to be a willing mass-murdering war criminal is more relatable than Anakin's desire to save loved ones from death

For one, I thin people should start letting go the EU in viewing this movie. This is just a fresh start for everything that happens after ROTJ. Whatever you have read or liked: let it go. Is has no place in non-EU SW canon.The other thing I'd like to say, TFA is in a sense a reboot. A soft reboot, as some call it: we have a whole bunch of new characters (Rey, Finn and Poe) whom we will be following for the next two movies. I think the Skywalker line may be continued after a redemption of Kylo Ren, and if he does die, it's Rey we will follow.
Han died here, Luke will probably die in the next. And then Kylo is all that is left of the Skywalker family. And who knows where that will go. At least this time we won't know how i will end.
I think doing any SW movie is ballsy, because you're gonna get the heat from millions of fans, whether you do it right or wrong. There will always be many who hate what you do. Heck, we SW fans even caused Lucas to resign and let someone else make an Episode VII, even Lucas said a) there will never be a VII and b) no one else will make it. Again, Lucas changed his mind, like he has done some many times.
Personally I have some issues with some bits of this movie. But I thought, after those dreadfull, lifeless PT movies, this was going back to simple cineman fun: space adventures with likeable characters. Everything the PT did NOT have. Everything the OT DID have.
So yeah, it's simple (so was the OT) and there's stuff to gripe about. It's originality for instance. But wow, what a SW movie did we get: a REAL one. With FUN, great new characters and I BELIEVED what was happening. JJ did a very good job, it's no new ESB, but it beats every PT movie about of the ball park.
Damnit, I started to think about the movie and now its become apparent that its not the Star Wars movie that the hype made it out to be.
Spoiler:
Also exactly how is the resistance under-funded/manned if they are supporting the legitimate government? Furthermore how is the First Order capable of obtaining the resources/personal for its Starkiller if the Empire is no more and I still want to know how Luke let Kylo Ren get away with killing all of his padawan.

The way I read it is that The First Order (as a successor of the Empire) and the New Republic (with the Resistance being it's main army part) are somewhat similarly sized rather than one completely overshadowing the other
Spoiler:
As I recall at one point Hux complains about the Republic thinking they're safe due to their fleets. My impression is that the Republic was stronger because the First Order put alot of their eggs into Starkiller base because they learned jack shit.The basic state as far as I can tell is that the Republic and First Order aren't directly at war but the Resistance is working to defeat the FO without official Republic backing to free the galaxy from their evil once and for all.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense.
