I find the grey rat conspiracy fascinating and little-discussed.
the theory is that the citadel/maesters deliberately killed the dragons off (through some means which made them hatch all stunted and short-lived) and still conspire to kill the targareon blood line off.
possible motive is simply old blood feud since the targs were brutal in their conquest because firkin dragons.
remember who talked the mad king into opening the gates of kings langing open for tywin to begin the sacking and bloodline extermination. coincidence?
imho the evidence is very compelling http://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/11setm/spoilers_all_a_full_analysis_of_the_maesters_in/

Excellent read. Now I know where those theories are coming from (or at least a central location of all of those theories).
There is a conversation that was had between someone and a maester. I want to say it was Bran and Luwin. It was that basically man did not need magic anymore because the maesters were around. It has been such a long time since I read that book and I may not be remembering the details very well but that would support that gent's point.
Anyway, good find. Thanks for sharing.

Well, you open the book starting with the cover. You read it left to right. Have your cock out during Cersei's chapters.
Instead, I got something much better. Dem Cersie chaps. droolio

Is this worth it to any of you? I'm a few chapters into Feast, but I've recently read about the option of this guys splice of Feast and Dance. It puts both books together into a monstrous 120 chapter read, but everything is in chronological order with the exception of a few chapters that were switched around as to not spoil you on something that happens. This is the only chance I'll have to make this choice, and this has apparently made the experience better for a ton of people. The pacing is improved, and the climax is pretty great too apparently. Should I combine both the books? I've already downloaded A Ball of Beasts to my kindle, so I'm already set.
Man, Jon's second chapter was ****ing insane.
Spoiler:
His beheading of Janos Slynt. I did not see that coming. It almost seemed a bit harsh, but I understand why he did it. The nod he got from Stannis gave me chills too. He's gonna make one hell of a Lord Commander. He almost seems like a different character now. He reminded me of a colder Eddard this chapter.I'm also happy he got Maester Aemon the hell out of there. I was already theorizing that Stannis would end up burning him for his kings blood. Thank god Jon was two steps ahead on that.
I like how quickly he's moving as Lord Commander. He's already got plans to garrison the rest of the wall, he planned ahead for Val's kid and Aemon, he's sending for a ton of Maesters for each of the forts, had Sam researching the others (who managed to find that Valarian Steel is a weakness of theirs even more so than obsidian) and training his sword play more intensely than ever.
Him sending away Sam, on the other hand, gives me a bad feeling. More often than not in this series, if people who love each other are separated, they never see each other again (the exception to this being Lannisters, mainly). Since I'm reasonably sure Jon is the main character in the series because of the L+R=J theory, I don't think Sam is going to survive and make his way back to the wall. Thankfully, I've never cared much for Sam. Jons my favorite character (well, second to Ned of course).
Also, that one chapter I've read in Dorne was interesting. The Sand Snakes are a bunch of badasses. I love how they're all just united in the idea of going for vengeance, like their father. They all take after Oberyn, though that may prove to be a problem. Prince Doran, on the other hand, I'm not sure about yet. He seems a great deal smarter than his younger brother, but comes off as weak. I don't like how he imprisoned Oberyns girls. I understand why it's necessary, but honestly, his little brother and sister were killed by the same *sshole. You'd think he'd want some revenge, but instead, he says that he prays Lord Tywin sees how good of a friend he is. Wtf? I hope to god thats for the sake of keeping his enemies unaware before he strikes (to earn him some kind of snake related moniker). I was expecting him to completely set Dorne loose on the world after what happened to Oberyn in ASoS. He's disappointed me so far.
Dem Sand Snakes tho.
Anyway, I'm about 10% of the way through my Feast/Dance (Ball) read through. So far, I'm loving it. The pacing is great, and for some reason, GRRMs writing seems improved. It was already great, and leagues above me, but it's different. In a good way, of course.
I do not think you have to use spoiler tags in this thread...
Do not come into this thread, Arachnid, if you do not want shit spoiled. There is a spoiler, below:
Regardless, Jon Snow got his shit stabbed and we do not know if he is dead or alive...
If you were talking about the new stuff that has been circulating (the chapters GRRM released early), then I am not reading those...
But I did not highlight your text, just in case.

It took x100 self control, and made me feel uncomfortable.
You sick temptress, you.
I will return to this thread once I finish the book.

Okay. I see. That's why I put that warning in there before I listed spoiler stuff.
I did not want to spoil (for myself) the up-and-coming books and I thought that was the stuff you were talking about. Once you've read the books, I would say, read through all 21 pages of this thread. Some good discussions have been had.
Ned Stark wasn't a king, and Stannis didn't recognize Robb Stark's claim to dominion of the North and the Riverlands; Stannis offered Jon legitimization as Stark, which would have granted him the seat of Winterfell and made him a lord. It wouldn't have made him a king. Edric Storm and Dalla's son by Mance Rayder are both the direct descendants of men proclaimed to be king, to one of whom Stannis owes his own claim; Mance is king of territories separate from the Westerosi kingdoms, and thus might actually be worthy under whatever rules Stannis and Melisandre operate by. (It's been a while since I've read Dance, I might be missing something specific.)
But I'm sure that Jon Snow being a Stark bastard doesn't mean Stannis and Melisandre think he has kingsblood. House Stark wasn't the only bloodline to survive Aegon's conquest by giving up its crown.
