They're doing a sequel to this? That's strange. I always imagined it as a one-off, leading to other spin off's.
well a sequel was announced but that doesn't mean it will actually get made.. WB should really make sure people will see the first one before greenlighting a second..
Hmmm...
It took me a lot of time, but I've made a comparison of Youtube + Facebook views for all big movies recently (including offcial trailers, TV spots, clips, promotional videos etc with a considerable number of views - 1m+) and it looks like this:Suicide Squad - 370m
Star Wars: TFA - 380m
Captain America: CW - 430m
Batman v Superman - 475m
Deadpool - 310m
Rogue One - 76m
And trust me, I've calculated every 1m+ video (trailer, clip, promo) I could find on FB or YT for every one of these movies.
Now, of that list, only SS and RO are still to be released. That is important to mention because after the movie's release trailers also get views. For example, TFA's biggest trailer on YT (93m) got 30m of those views after it's release, according to YT Stats. That means that, at the time of release, it only got 63-65m views. Still, I counted them as a whole. Same with all the other movies. So, with 370m views, SS might be, at this time before release, the biggest one of them all. It it certainly bigger than TFA. And with a month ahead and possible another trailer on the way, SS will push over 400m with ease and I think it has a very good chance of becoming the most viewed in history.
Of course, you would say - well, TFA made 900m+. BvS only made 330m. And you would be right. You can't predict a movie's run by using pre-release factors, especially because these factors, online media, represent the interest in a movie shown mainly by youth. They are the ones using these social media sites. TFA had a lot of older generations coming to see it.
Still, this tracking can be used to determine somewhat the opening weekend. Fact is (and these are pure numbers) that online (and strictly online), Suicide Squad runs the same as or higher than SW, BvS or CW. Now that is extraordinary because all the others are established franchises, with established characters. SS is original. Yes, it has Joker one Batman scene, but what is Joker compared to Batman, Superman, The Avengers or the original SW cast.
Also worth noting, SS is running way way ahead of Rogue One. Of course, again, we have the older demo, that won't be interested in SS, but even so, this is another amazing feat.
I don't know about it's DOM total, but OW wise, it is running way ahead of Deadpool through the same point (I think through the same point Deadpool was more than 100m views behind). I don't know if it will touch CW or BvS, but even if it doesn't, I just can't see less than 150m on OW. Not with this kind of numbers and buzz.

I understand views don't mean final DOM total, but the poster makes a good case for OW. I just posted that mainly due to how impressive his post was.
Pretty much all my coworkers are excited for this. It's going to do well OW. Grand total, I'm not sure.

They aren't, but they had a very good start with IM1 and later with Av1.Marvel took their time and planned the whole thing carefully.
They also had a bunch of mediocre films in between. And it's not like everyone hated MOS. In fact, GA liked it for the most part as was pointed out many times in multiple threads. DCEU first two films grossed 1.5 billion and counting. I think they'll be ok.
