Star Trek Beyond

The problem was that it was more like a big episode than a feature film. And that was coming off of the very successful First Contact.

I think all the Next Gen films seemed like long episodes tbh. And aside from FC they were not even good episodes.

The series was great but I think the films were a major let down personally (aside from FC).

I think Nemesis, and the poor reception for Enterprise hurt Star Trek as a whole, and demand for the franchise began to decline.

Yeah definitely, those 2 factors pretty much killed the demand for Star Trek for a while.

I liked Generations, but yeah, FC is the strongest of the bunch. Poor Tom Hardy also.

It didn't help that DS9 really wouldn't have suited a film due to wrapping up the way it did, and Voyager... Well, who wants to see a Voyager movie.

.

I can't be bothered double checking the facts but I think from memory they did use the same writers & directors from the tv series making the movies feel like a 2 part episode. Plus the actors felt so comfortable playing their familiar roles, it really made no difference to them whether it was another episode for tv or a big screen feature.

iirc First Contact was the only one where they really pushed for the big movie feel. It was directed by Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker), but I remember him saying how they wanted to up the scale for it compared to the other movies.

It shows too, imo.

Quinto admits he was bored to pieces with the original show. Just as I said and he like me admits this new reimagining is far superior unlike the Robtards. Also shows how close the cast was and how the loss of Anton has devastated the entire crew.

The problem is it's essentially been reimagined as Star Wars..but with Star Trek characters. It's not hard to see why some people love it so much. I do think Into Darkness is the best of all Trek films. To be fair I have hated pretty much all Star Trek films up until the recent reboot.

But I also do like TNG a lot. It's not the same thing as this new stuff. The normal series is like submarine warfare in a way, that is how the original was too. They are able to have more complex plots with the characters due to being able to develop them a lot more on a series.(which is what TNG did). I haven't watched a lot of the other Trek shows in depth. I've seen nearly all of the original series and TNG, and a couple episodes from DS9 and Voyager. For Voyager I mostly checked out the Q episodes.

If either the newer movies or shows like TNG had to be erased from existence and I had to choose...I would choose to save TNG. Mostly because you have a shitload of episodes and while not all are good there are still a lot of great episodes. So it has a lot more content to offer than the new movies do.

as long as Idris steals the film.. I'm in

Well I always preferred Star Wars to Star Trek prior to Abrams so to me it's perfect the way it is now. If it just ends up being a trilogy then so be it but I'd love for it to continue. To me it's this simple they are either great films or they aren't. Any purist crying about anything else is only deluding themselves. They always have the old series and the old films which aren't going anywhere.

If you liked TNG at all, I think you'd really like DS9. It's arguably the best written Star Trek of them all. Sure, the first couple of seasons take time to get going, but it really hits its stride in season 3 and especially season 4.

👆

DS9 was a great show.

Though I'm not sure that any/all Next Gen fans would necessarily like it given it was a much deeper show than Next Gen.

No love for voyager?

I LOVED voyager and TNG

There is a definite shift, sure, but I think it has all the best stuff TNG had, just with more of it.

Voyager sucked, even as jeri ryan joined....

best treks are TNG and DS9, then Kirk

I'm actually probably going to start viewing DS9 on netflix, I need another show to watch.

No YOU suck Bruce...

you don't really Bruce uhuh

Voyager managed to ruin the Borg then introduce an even more badass adversary (species 8472) then ruin them as well.

It did bring in some awesome tech into the ST lore though.

There are some stand-out episodes, don't get me wrong, but there is a lot of bad.

Sometimes when I watch it, it feels like they were trying to recreate the TOS in a lot of ways. That's both good and bad.

They just did a lot of meh to bad stuff, just as Jaden said. And they barely used the only "proper" Vulcan we've ever gotten as a series regular.
