Depends, my thorbagging friend. When you suffer from kidney stones, for example, beer helps so f*cking lot, you may even accept the fatal consequences. Each case is different.
God, I hope so.
I've been lucky enough to nevee had kidney stones, but I've seen the effect it had on my father. All three times.
Didn't look fun.
I can tell you from experience, a single - acute - kidney colic attack is enough to make you hate life.
The experts compare the pain to getting shot or giving birth*, supposedly only the pancreatic cancer is worse.
Acute renal colic pain is one of the most intense painful sensations ever experienced by humans and is comparable to breaking of bones, child birth or gunshot wound.

I haven't had a serious attack in a long time, but I still live in fear of it. Bleeding from intestines or taking a beating is a picnic compared to the hell that is a renal colic.

I've only heard stories, drinking beer sounds better than dealing with what you're describing though, holy shit.

Can confirm. I've kidney stones on occasion and I don't even drink. Most severe cases required emergency hospital.
Yes, ended up in the emerency room myself. On the same day I was supposed to meet my crush. Treatment there was poor and delayed, I was going borderline psycho from the pain. Life sucks.
Other attacks, I was lucky enough to have my mother nearby and called her. She is a doctor and she's suffering from kidney stones herself, so she knew exactly what injections and meds should be given to me.

You need serious exercise
Athletes don't have it any easier with the kidney stones, as far as I know. But sure, regular exercise won't hurt... other than that, drinking a lot of liquids (cranberry juice has a good rep), taking meds and avoiding anything that can contribute to the creation of kidney stones (easier said than done).
Hah, this is kidney stones, not hypertension.
I'm sure exercise helps across the board, and may reduce risk and such, but some people are just prone to those things. (I mean, doctors claim exercise reduces cancer risk too. Tell that to the newly born infant around here who was lucky enough to be born to a doctor that noticed a lump..)
