disclaimer: i don't want to ban guns, and i'm not here to take them from you. so settle down, john wayne. i just want to point out:
for anyone who points out this shit happened in a "gun free" zone. most likely the guns weren't purchased in said "gun free" zone. it always amazes me the amount of denial that pro-gun people are in with regard to the correlation between legal guns and our high murder rates. like they point to cities like chicago which are also strict on guns, yet gun violence is rampant.
but you only have to drive to the suburbs to buy a legal gun. it's not rocket science that "gun free zones" don't work when guns are easy to get everywhere else, and there is free travel between all of these places
gun bans are an all or nothing thing... either you get rid of them nationwide, or not at all.
i will say the one city that has seen some level of success with this sort of thing is NY. but NY is an anomaly... there is no other city in the US which is remotely like it. NY is the kind of city where tough policing and "stop and frisk" combined with tough laws can bring the murder rate down... because it is so dense. even here, however, the effect is somewhat limited. NY has seen a dramatic decrease in murders over the past few decades... and recently the murders have continued to slowly decline. but it does seem we are going to be stuck with say no less than 300 a year, which is high by "developed nation" standards yet relatively low by american standards (when adjusted for population). but just to keep things in perspective, at its crime peak NY had over 2000 murders in a single year. and no i'm not saying it's all down to gun laws... there are a number of police strategies that have reformed that city in terms of crime.
but in general gun free zones are stupid. just logistically. but if you expand it to the entire country then it is potentially effective, like england, but even there, we have problems that england, australia, france etc don't have. namely that we can't seem to control our borders to the extent that an entire industry has been built on smuggling shit both to and from the united states.
