Not sure what to make of this movie. There were some great scenes, bad ones, many f*cking weird ones, and the plot was a bit curious. I expect it will take a second or even third viewing before I decide whether I like it or not.
Having watched this film again I found that I really enjoyed it. The humour is out there but ultimately funny, modern and I found myself embracing it. As I did many of the more new and challenging concepts. The acting is some of the best I've seen in a Star Wars movie. Hamill's performance was exceptional, and the interplay between Luke/Rey/Snoke/Kylo really brilliant as well. There was barely a single central character in this film that's storyline wasn't static, Rey confronted her past and started down the path of becoming a Jedi, Finn went from rebel-without-cause to rebel-undoubtedly-with-one, Poe learned the importance of leadership and responsibility, Luke rediscovered hope and confronted Kylo, Kylo threw off the constraints of Snoke and started making his own choices (even if they were
still the wrong ones) - who in general, has developed immense depth as a villain, and as a foil to the protagonist.
Thematically the film was more ambitious and complex than perhaps any previous movie, it built on the classic OT themes of heroism and hope but subverted the tropes intelligently and confronted the idea of legends and myth in imo a really fulfilling way. As well as what it means to fight and how the way we do it defines us - I love how there was not a single point in the movie that Luke attacked anyone.
The fight sequences were fantastic, the Rey/Kylo vs Praetorian Guards fight had some damn exquisite choreography (one guy clapped at the end lmfao), the Phasma vs Finn fight was an intense and f*cking stellar performance from Christie, and the Kylo vs Luke fight was as much a clash between philosophies than a visual showdown. In which respect each of the fights balanced style and substance really well, I felt as if each one emotionally resonated in a critical way.
All in all production values were exceptional, its not hard to have the most advanced visuals of any SW movie with current technology, but this might have had the best of any movie I've seen, and it did it without being too excessive, but still pulling off some incredible shots (like Luke confronting a legion of walkers.)
The climax was fantastic, the Battle of Crait easily wins the award for most exciting battle sequence, and Luke's final lines are already in my mind iconic (just as are Yoda's) and to me it was a satisfying send-off. All in all, a film miles ahead of TFA and may even pip ROTJ in my mind as my 4th? favourite SW movie behind ESB, RotS and ANH, successive viewings will tell in time. 🙂
