In as much seriousness as necessary when discussing fantasy sci-fi laser wizard movies, your last statement is prolly my biggest beef with this new trilogy: everything from the original trilogy has become a lost cause at the outset of Force Awakens and especially in The Last Jedi.
At the start of The Last Jedi, even though the Resistance had previously took out a multi-planet destroying Death Star, they are a few dozen ships strong about to wiped out.
Going back further, everything that Luke, Leia, and Han accomplished with the Rebels was for naught from 30 years prior: Han = deadbeat dad that leaves his wife, Leia = son is one of the Sith leaders for the First Order, Luke = resigned to being a hermit after turning his father back to the light side of the force. Give me a break.

Yeah, its set up that way. You're supposed to be on Poe's side and distrust Holdo along with him. That's why I'm not as hard on Poe as most are. From his point of view it was understandable why he made the choices he did. With her aggressive put down of Poe and her non-military appearance its easy to question her credibility. Ultimately though the movie argues not to make such assumptions and be so hotheaded. Poe should have trusted her, in her intro he even mentions that shes a famous military commander but lets his judgement get clouded.
