Hm.. What I'm gathering is that nothing short of a painstakingly faithful GoT-esque series would satisfy some peoples' expectations from the book. And that's fair, but when you get a film adaptation there are always things that have to be lost.

Honestly I think I'd prefer a few solidly packed, epic films (let's hope) to a long, long slog like GoT.

I see Dune tonight...

The irony with your post is that huge swathes of the ASOIAF books were also left out in GoT to make it less of a slog

The film is amazing. Best sci fi film in years.
I still haven’t seen the Martian, but I hear it’s good.

...especially since GoT is a glaring example of "unfaithful to source material". yeah that made my eye twitch a bit to read. but hey, some people loved the last season of GoT, and i respect their disasterous opinions as well. 👆

The world-building is extraordinary. You can see exactly why Denis V. wanted to split the book into two films. To give time to inhabit the world and give the viewer scenery to chew on. I loved how lived-in the planets looked. The machinery and structures on Arrakis to mine the spice, and even hints of speciation amongst the different peoples, etc. It is going to be a cinematic crime if the next film isn't greenlit. And at this point, even though I haven't read it yet (I will), I think it'll be a crime if he doesn't get to complete a trilogy with Dune Messiah. This shows potential to be an all-time great Trilogy. Of course you can nitpick all the subtle details that were left out from the book, but that's dumb. I love that you can read the book and fill in the some details with this absolutely brilliant film adaptation.

Denis Villeneuve delivers a masterpiece... 10/10 film

Film absolutely buries Disney Star Wars.

Well, not that that's a huge accomplishment. But I'd say it buries any Star Wars. Considering Star Wars stole pretty much everything significant that it has from Dune.

I have watched it multiple times now. From my perspective, it's excellent.

But I also went in not knowing anything about the franchise, so I didn't have any preconceived notions about what should be included. As such, I cannot speak to how faithful it was to the novels.

👆

Sounds good. I should probably move my ass to theater.

Then again, Modern Galan nerdgasms over pretty much anything these days... 😛

@PL nobody was "nitpicking" in this thread. furthermore, if your newest "greatest film EVERRRR!!" is so great as to be beyond any valid criticism, then why does a negative review obstruct your ability to reexperience this masterpiece?

It's what marriage has done to me. 🙁

I don't really know what you're getting at, man. What makes you think your criticisms have any effect on how I enjoy the film? Don't think so highly of yourself.

I simply addressed how I viewed some of your criticisms.

You do you. I don't care.

I don’t know if anyone will agree with me on this, but I think the best recent sci-fi film is Star Trek (2009)

glad i wasn't intruding on your enjoyment of the film. but again i have to ask: why go out of your way to marginalize and dismiss valid opinions on a movie, because you don't agree with them? you are aware that doing so is passive agressively rude and uncalled for. 👆

Cant really see what the hype is about...

Dont know anything about the lore thought I would give it a chance.

Its not a bad movie but there wasnt a single moment in it that would have captured me.

I’ve never seen the first film nor read the book, so I’m ignorant about this franchise.

I might watch it at home today.

It was alright, but personally I think 2005's Serenity was the best space sci fi film.

Its definitely up there. The Kelvin films are much better than the sequel Star Wars trilogy from Disney.

I'm not sure why you're so upset with me that you've repeated yourself like 3 times. Nothing I said was meant to be rude: I know you're very familiar with the source material and that often leads to disappointment in film adaptations because so much is often lost in translation to the screen. This is a thing that happens. Often. Not sure how I'm being rude. Now, if you want to show that I'm way off, fine. You're welcome to do that, but from my point of view it seems a fair assessment.

I'm honestly not sure why you're not more mad at blake...

I hate nerds who rip a film based on a book because it’s not what their imagination was when reading boring black and white pages. It will never be the same experience, in fact there are 6 different approaches to analyze a film adaptation because it will always inevitably be different.

Being familiar with the lore helps the film a lot, actually. It's honestly a ton to take in all within a 2.5 hour sitting.

Anyway, despite the fact that I have almost zero knowledge of the source material I still enjoyed it immensely. Unfortunately it won't be a financial success because it's just too conceptual for audiences these days. Most people will come away with the same opinions they did with Blade Runner 2049, Raised by Wolves, Annihilation etc. Cold, unengaged and generally missing the themes and points.

Sadly I have a similar concern that it's a bit too complex for significant mainstream appeal. But surprisingly it performed pretty well for a pandemic box office opening so far...

Part of me wonders if HBO Max streams might actually help it? Perhaps a lot of people who wouldn't necessarily go out to the theater for it might pull lit up and watch at home...

Small taste of why he's such an impressive director...

I make good points.

*sigh* yet im not the one who's been marginalizing, misrepresenting, and dismussing someone's opinion, just because i don't like it, and now you're going to gaslight me over it? spare me the "sorry you got offended" schenanigans, lets just drop it.
