The drones are capable of physically attacking ftl intruders. The way they were portrayed, that's pretty much their avenue of attack.

Surfer was not entirely on his board for flight while engaging.
And Surfer was never shown overwhelmed physically. He was literally dancing and acrobatting his way around them.
