8 months is definitely on the light side, but death penalty seems a little excessive, no?
I don't believe in the death penalty for any reason. But in the US, the punishment for treason can be death:
CHAPTER 115—TREASON, SEDITION, AND SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES: Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

I hear that "a Black woman in Texas, was sentenced to five years for voting when she didn’t realize a past felony conviction made her ineligible."Accidentally voting when you weren't eligible vs. trying to overthrow the government. Does that seem fair? 🙄
Cos our penal system is rigged to favor some and shit on others. eg If it had been Black Muslims who stormed the Capital while ranting "death to Mike Pence!", they'd be handed prison sentences in the decades, not months.
edit: Well, the ones that didn't get shot and killed on the spot that is
