I think the problem here is the viewer, not the film.
It certainly wasn't a piece of crap, that's for sure.
However, it had really stupid parts in it.

Isn't hackmeister Paul W. S. Anderson reason enough?

Kind of, but I was thinking more just because it was a piece of crap. I enjoyed the first bit but once it got to the end and Sam Neil said I'm taking this ship to hell that was it for me it could of been so much better instead of that.

Star Wars for me!
Anyway I still think the best scifi movie of (last) year as District 9. It was simply phenomenal.

Moon was shit.
I enjoyed district 9 (although it did have some faults) the aliens looked more believable than the ones in avatar.
another best scifi movie ever mad PREDATOR.

ESB for me, special mention to; Alien, Aliens, POTA, 12 Monkeys (Except for the stupid ending) and Robot Jox! There's 100's more probably but there is so little time.

My vote is for "Alien" and "The Abyss" although The Abyss is not technically Science Fiction. I also liked "The Langoliers" by Stephen.
I must admit, I did like Star Wars and "2001 a Space Odyssey".

2001: A Space Odyssey is an obvious choice. And I'm not going to assert that it's the greatest sci-fi film of all time, necessarily, but it's a favorite of mine: The Cell.
Other fun notables in my book:
The Matrix Trilogy
Alien(s)
Moon
Dark City
Pandorum (poorly done, I know, but I really like the story... it's fun)
Blade Runner I think is overrated. But then again I've never read the original source material.. and I'm annoyed that's there's like 15 different versions of the film..
