Should we be informed?

There's a law in Canada, that when a sex-offender leaves jail, and goes to live in a half-way house or etc. the authorities aren't allowed to release the fact that he was a once a sex offender to the public based on human rights laws.

Now me and my friends were discussing this the other day in debate (I'm a dork 😮) and I'm a firm believer in the need to tell the public. I think it's only fair we be informed, because alot of these people re-offend, and it's only fair to put the public on alert.

However, some people say that it wouldn't be fair to the person, who may have made one mistake his whole life, and he shouldn't need to pay for it his whole life, and they believe that it's only fair they be given a second chance.

It's a law in the US, I believe...and I strongly support it; sexual offenders often repeat their abuses, and political correctness aside, I'd sure as hell like to know if there's a convicted pedophile or whatever running around my neighborhood. People get too worked up about being polite and what not, when it's just common sense to keep your children safe as opposed to keeping your neighbor's criminal record secret or not 😬

i think if the person has done it more than once, then yes, the public should know.
but if its their first time (and they're at least acting sorry for doing it) then the public shouldnt be informed.
yes it is a dangerous thing, but what if the person had been under drugs, drunk, or just going through a tough time in life. i know it's their own fault that they raped the girl (or man 😑 ) but i think everyone deserves a second chance.

like i said, if theyve done it more than once, or arent even sorry for it (for example if, when they get put into jail, they say "i dont care! once im released ill just do it again" or some crazy thing) the public should be notified!

I completely agree, there's such a thing as being too politically correct 🙄

I mean say that you have a child, and he\she goes playing in the street alone, I would like to be aware of where they should be allowed to go or not go, I don't want them getting friendly with the wrong people 😬

I disagree, once they do it the second time, they shouldn't be released into the public for life.

I mean the third time could be something much worse.

usually, it's that second time when someone ends up dead 😬 if that didn't happen the first time, obviously...

i really would like to know, especially if i have a little kid. and it is actually mandated by law here in the US, to disclose the fact that the individual is a sex offender.

That's why I believe we should be told, it's only fair.

Since alot of these people are mentally unstable, I think if you are willing to do it once, you will do it again, of course there are exceptions to the rule, but still, generilzing that's what I believe.

I think it's anywhere between 3 months to a few years 😬 depending....

depends, really...on the exact charges and what not, but anywhere from 10-15+ years

for rape? i think it should be at least 5 years 😬

just think though, how horrible jail would be! its just the same old boring things every day!
who knows why people would do stuff to acctually go back in there 😑 (mind you, who knows why theyd do the stuff in the first place 🙄 )

I meant technically, they shouldn't be in the vicinity of a minor, alone after they are released, if they are found, I think they should be locked up for a long time 😬

now that is a good idea! make sure theres someone (not just an odinary friend of theirs. some like a cop or something) with them when theyre with youngsters.

who knows how the people will know if theyre with a child in the first place though 😬 i dont think someone following them arround 24/7 would be too fair.

well, rape in the US has a sanction of 20 years to life (i'm basing this on the bryant case) or 20 years to life in probation... i guess it does depend on the offense. but in my opinion pedophilia, one time offense earns you life. which wouldn't really pan out since they hate child molestors in jail. somebody would probably kill him.

Well they're allowed to go places right, I think they should be under survelience, one wrong look at a child, and they should be hauled back in, there's enough crime in the world without devasting our children too 😬
