Cid was actually pathetic, he was even being pushed around by his own faculty just before the Norg fight...
He was Edea's husband, yes, but there was no mention of him being her knight, the title Sorceress' knight was self proclaimed by Seifer...

The most important missions, and THE most important mission were given to Squall in the story, the command of the entire Garden was given to Squall, Cid trusted him to the limit, he knew he was the best, no one is going to argue that, he's by fact the best in SeeD. Squall's party are by far the best SeeDs as well, but Squall's the absolute best, also called Legendary by Ultimecia, who by the way has fallen in battle by Squall and his party, and she kills SeeDs like ants.

The title of Knight was from the movie Laguna was filming, called the Sorceress Knight or something, I believe.

I have (kind of) replied to that already. Headmaster is not the same as being a Commander, the Garden was never mobile until Squall took charge of it, etc, etc. Is kind of boring to keep arguing in circles.

Read my post... I believe he was a fighter, I didn't said Cid is strong, nor I haven't stated anything, he by himself said he is too old for this when he demanded Squall to take charge of the Garden's mobile system... 🤪 I don't know what are you trying to argue against me really.
I don't have the ultimania but what you're saying may be possible. The rank "commander" may have become official after it was bestowed on Squall. Ergo, Squall is the first commander of SeeD...
I'm pretty sure though that the title itself was made up by both Xu and Quistis as they said that Squall needed a title when he was made leader of the garden and they decided on "commander". This is the scene right before you take control of the mobile garden and Nida is introduced as it's pilot...

And what does that means? That Squall had the Headmaster Cid's approval to lead everything and take decisions, of course. The "Commander" is a military title, for dangerous operations and to lead battles around the world, like a knight of a kingdom, Balamb is a military institution which trains the best warriors in the planet, it isn't just some random title. Everyone in the Garden trusts Squall, that's a fact.
Lol I'm not disputing the etymology of commander, what I meant was that the formal title of "commander" IN the game was given by Xu and Quistis, making Squall the first to bear the title, after which MAY have been included in the Ultimania as Spadeking was saying...
Was there ever an overall SeeD commander before Squall? No...
Xu and Quistis could have gone with "Bossman", or "Big Kahuna"...
Again, the promotion of Squall as the leader of Garden came from Cid, but the title of "commander" was thought of by Xu and Quistis...
