If, mace moved to the side or turned his body he would have an open shot to cut off his hand or whatever else.
Imagine Sidious went ahead and sent a jab motion, Mace windu pivots his body 90 degrees, now he has multiple areas to strike at.
If you watched the fight earlier you could see that mace has great reflexes.

Swordplay doesn't work like that. Especially with two skilled combatants. Having your opponent in the position Mace was in would not allow someone, unless they had slow reflexes (in which Mace does not have), to get in a killing blow such as that. All Mace had to do was what he did not even a second later.
And you've seen Qui-Gon vs. Maul, Qui-Gon ducked and slashed - what happened? Maul jumped.
Its too close for him to avoid a thrust. Its what boxing refers to as "being inside" their defences. There is nothing that Mace could have done to stop Sidious if he just jumped forward at him. Its impossible. Even with 'Jedi' Reflexes, its too close for him to pivot sideways, the saber would still make contact with Mace even if he did. Its inside Mace's defences, and physically impossible for him to avoid. If he pivoted it would make contact with his arm or the sides of his chest at least. Either way, Sidious had him at this point, but did nothing.

Well, Mace had the lightsaber at his throat in the end of the duel as well, but did nothing, again bad job with the fight scene.

Mace was there to kill him, I'm sorry.. the reason he dident finish sidious off was because he was interupted by Anakin, and then interuppted by the lightning. Mace himself knew he controlled the senate and apprehending is useless.

Mace wanted to arrest him. lol. Not kill him at this point. Thats why Sids used his lightning, to give Mace a reason to want to kill him. So that when Anakin got there, the scene of "the Jedi are trying to take over" was in place.
I'm not sure about the faking thing so I won't take any sides, but there is just something I realized when I watched the movie...
When Sidious is firing lightning at Mace, near the end (where Sidious fakes to be weak), just before he stops, Mace gets hit on the hand and only holds the lightsaber with one hand, at that moment Sidious stops. Sidious clearly had power left, but Mace could barley hold against him with both of his arms, he would have no chance with one....

Oh really? Is that why Mace says "You are under arrest my lord" or came into his office and said "in the name of the Galactic senate of the Republic, your under arrest chancellor"??

Some people who don't have any idea about swordfighting should simply keep their mouths shut instead throwing nonsense into the thread.
Sidious stands there with his arm extended and his entire body pointing towards Mace. What should he have done, huh ? Considering both having equal movement speed the very same moment Sidious would have tried to do a killing move (e.g. fast step forward), Mace would have reacted by pushing Sidious saber aside and slash him wherever he wanted - and WTF - we see exactly THIS happening when Sidious tries to move forward, Mace turns the saber away and they end up in a saber lock because Mace didn't want to kill Sidious at this point.
The same movement in the exact oposite direction and Sidious blade would have been pushed away from his body with Mace blade being between Sidious and Sidious own lightsaber - no defence options left Sidious would have died.
I don't even know why you people cling to your stupid "Sidious faked it" theory. Hello...he wanted to KILL Mace, as Lucas himself states and FAILS to do so - would you please use some logic. You don't fake a lightsaber duel just to kill the oponent with a lightning blast 5 seconds later. It's plain and simple stupid. It's like having the opportunity to kill an opponent with a sword then FAKE the swordfight in an impossible way, having the opponent nearly killing you - just to pull the gun out of your pocket and shoot him. And no - you can't fake losing your weapon by having the opponent kicking it out of your hand. That movement surprised Sidious. The only way to "fake" a weapon lose is to pretend the opponent hits your weapon so powerful that you can't hold it any longer. Something like this would have been debateable. But no...Mace kicks the weapon out of Sidious hand. And in context with Lucas own words that Sidious wanted to destroy Mace with his first lightning wave the theory DOESN'T MAKE SENSE - get it into your head. There was no difference between slashing Mace down or roasting him to death - he didn't even talk to Anakin before trying to do it. Period. Debate over...

Get it through your head: We have Mace discovering Sidious's shatterpoint, Sidious dropping his guard and his speed, Sidious wanting to convert Anakin, Sidious knowing Anakin better than anyone, Sidious's later own POV reflecting how he's never been truly defeated, Sidious's eyes flicking to Luke when he's smiling, Sidious having demonstrated the ability to shift faces...

What? In the video I see both of them duke it out until almost abruptly Mace kicks the saber out of his hand. There was no slowing down or dropping his guard. It actaully looked as if mace was struggling for a second. Notice the teeth clench.

A jedi does not walk up to someone and threaten to kill them, that was just a casual way of mace saying your f**ing screwed. Anyway..Mace is not the type of person to "arrest" the chancellor. He is a badass and would most certainly kill him.
