I think a lot of people are forgetting what the debate is about. It's not about which character has the best theme song or which one is better at raping the other one in the ass it's a pretty good fight.
I think Sephiroth would win.
First off let me list out the abilities of the combatants.
KRATOS
Good attributes: insane physical strength, unmatched stamina, amazing weaponry range and proficiency, adaptable to most enemies, some very useful magical abilities, very high resistance to pain. (i haven't played every God of War game but i think this is enough)
Bad attributes: Not very fast, Low self control (although he's pretty perceptive), only an average agility (very important in fights), and i will point out that while he has extreme power it still takes him a few combo's to beat low level "Goon" enemies when pushed he can kill gods.
SEPHIROTH
Good attributes: Insane speed and agility, unmatched sword skills, extremely physically powerful as one swing of masamune will slice a skyscraper in two, flight, amazing stamina, cataclysmic special attacks like meteor/comet, composure (mental and physical).
Bad attributes: No spectacular amount of defense against physical attacks, underestimates enemies. (please let me know if you think he has more weaknesses)
i'm going to add this in quickly. they are both mortal in this fight so death is death. no revivals or second lives. i'm not going to include their magical abilities in this so sephiroth can't summon a meteor and kratos can't turn seph to stone. this is mano e mano or whatever. kratos can't call in buddies to help and sephiroth can't call in whoever he hangs out with. if magical abilities were allowed Seph would win but i'll explain that later. Kratos can only use his blades of chaos and sephirtoh can only use masamune. we don't need kratos pulling out giant hammers and shit if sephiroth can;t use his materia.
the arena is a ruined city with a few skyscrapers and areas with big open spaces. i chose this arena becuase it compliments both fighters abilities. the big open areas suit kratos well and the skyscrapers suit sephiroth.
ok here we go.
sephiroth stands in the city waiting for his opponent. there are no other humans in sight until a war painted main walks towards sephiroth. sephiroth wants all pathetic lifeforms dead and kratos is not going down easily. seph wastes not time and strikes first but kratos blocks the strike with his blades. kratos has stopped the attack using all of his strength but the leather cloaked swordsman barely bats an eye giving the impression that he was exerting no pressure at all. kratos (insulted) ready's his foot to kick him back but seph releases the struggle and quickly leapfrogs over him with a quick flip. kratos has no time to react when sephiroth swings his blade cutting kratos's back and sending him flying into the building a half mile away. kratos looks defeated for a second before standing up and shaking off the attack. sephiroth closes the large distance in an instant but kratos has realised his foes strategy and swings back with all his might. but even with kratos's immense strength the speed and momentum behind seph was enough to halt them both. kratos's was infuriated at this mans lack of strain and begins to slash wildly at seph but he just dodged every swipe until kratos hit him with an unexpected punch which nearly won the fight. sephiroth felt it and for the first time in the battle showed a sign of pain. kratos smiled cockily but sephiroth was done holding back. kratos had no idea what was coming. sephiroth sliced upwards with insane speed not only piercing kratos's rock hard skin but sending him rocketing up the building. sephiroth unfurled his one black wing and flew up into the air wiping the coughed up blood from his mouth. kratos's had no way to regain himself in the air and by the time the one winged angel of death had reached him it was too late. sephiroth began slashing with insane speed at kratos who was suspended in the air over and over and after about 50 slices of the blade kratos's delimbed and defeated body fell to the earth. sephiroth taking no chances flew down faster than the body in freefall and stabbed his blade through the fallen foes head killing him which made sephiroth smile at the new purity.
heres the thing guys. kratos is tough but sephiroth is just as powerful and 10 times as fast. kratos nearly killed seph with one kick but seph ain't no pushover. he can take a hit. so can kratos but in the end sephiroth is far to powerful and fast to be beaten. kratos just isnt at the same level as him.
now god of war fanboys! begin the hate!
also if they both had their magic seph would have instantly won with comet.

First off i did a good job on the story it may not have been necessary but it detailed the opponents reactions to each other.
Second if you really want to debate then give explanations/proof for your opinions.
i'll simplify my observations a bit with a little scale of abilities
KRATOS

my reasons for these are that kratos and sephiroth are all different on levels. kratos is a machine. i mean he can take hits and dish out the pain but most people think that sephiroth is weak. he isn't as tough as kratos when it comes to defence an kratos may hit harder but sephirth is so much faster and has much higher skill with sword fighting. sephiroth can fly and dodge very quickly but kratos can't. kratos would have to be lucky or try very hard to even it seph. since seph wouldn't have to worry about kratos being a hard to hit target he would easily hit him. kratos could throw is blades at seph to pull him out of the sky but sephiroth is too fast. kratos just doesn't have the reaction time to compete with a foe like that.
but in the end it's all opinion. kratos could get lucky and swipe seph which would automatically win the battle. when kratos has you chained up or if he's caught you in a weak spot you are dead. i only think sephiroth would win becuase that's my opinion. sephiroth has reach speed and is nearly as strong an attacker as kratos. kratos is tough but isn't invincible. you may say i'm wrong but it's all opinions... all of it. i THINK sephiroth would win and you THINK kratos would.

Sephiroth is not blitzing a guy who can react to and deflect lightning and keep up with guys who have feats in the Mach triple to quadruple digit range. And Sephiroth's own destructive feats make him sort of hardpressed to even dent Kratos
No, it's fact and comparison of stats, if one guy is Mach 1, and the other is Mach 8, the latter is superior based on said feats and we can objectively say this is the case

the way i see it is sephiroth is on a different level. if you have ever seen ff7 advent children you have seen his destructive power and superb reaction time. masamune (seph's sword) is long, light and powerful. kratos's fighting style usually involves brute strength and making use of his enemies weaknesses. kratos will look for an opening and attack furiously with his blades. sephiroth from what i've seen of him leaves no room for openings. it is quite obvious that sephiroth's agility and speed is much higher then that of kratos. also sephiroth is first class soldier so he has extreme physical strength. sephiroth usually keeps his enemies airborn to attack them and if we're talking a more realistic scale sephiroth would probably win very quickly with that approach. in ff7 it took 3 superhumans to take him down with extreme difficulty. also how many times has kratos died? plenty. sephiroth was seemingly killed but his life force actually survived and he was reborn. so when people boast about kratos's ability to beat gods they fail to mention how he has died so many times. in this fight kratos is mortal and sephiroth is the closest human thing to a god. also in advent children sephiroth lost to cloud becuase of clouds final attack. he cloaked himself in mako and slashed sephiroth multiple times. the life stream is sephiroth's weakness and that was the only reason that attack killed him. what's why no one else could kill him that easily. and technically the only things that can do major damage to him are materias which are made from condensed mako. i still think sephiroth would win.

in advent children the remnants walked out of a burning volcano, assuming sephiroth is 3 times as powerful as them in each's skill that would mean that he could easily survive a volcano. sorry about saying he did it directly, i didn't think properly. and the feats of kratos i was talking about was his fight with zeus and hercules. although sephiroth easily killed one of the earths weapons and i would put the earths weapons at around the same level of strength as hades or the titans. when i speak about sephiroth's speed i'm talking about the time in the unedited advent children japanese version where he dissapeared behind a large piece of rubble from a destroyed building and appeared almost instantly behind another one at least 80 feet away, all in freefall. also sephiroth's sword is a cutting sword and a long one at that. that, plus his effortless extreme speed, means sephiroth could delimb and decapitate kratos easily. i think if kratos tried to block sephiroth's sword with his hand it would just slice right through.

And no, if Kratos can stop the Blade of Olympus (which in a weaker form banished the Titans to Hades) wielded by Zeus (a being as strong as he is) with his hand, Sephiroth's Masamune will do shit to him
masamune is thinner, sharper and from what i've seen is unbreakable. when you debate over character fights you have to assume they're on a similar level becuase you can't really be sure how strong a character is compared to another in different universes. so it defeats the purpose when you keep saying that sephiroth is the equivalent of little baby with a pair of safety scissors and kratos is basically god of everything.

but you can't tell how hard those things would be in eaches universe becuase. for all we know sephiroth could easily kill zues or hercules. and kratos could be able to kill all the heroes from final fantasy 7 easily. maybe they couldn't we just can't tell. and sephiroth has never shown his full power and he's never really died. he always survives in some form. kratos HAS died several times. tetsuya nomura commented on sephiroth after the release of advent children. he said that sephiroth has never fought seriously and has never truly died or lost. apparently from what sephiroth has shown in all games and media is only 1 16th of his true power. at the end of advent children he says "I will... never be a memory" and fades. he didn't lose at all and he doesn't plan to in the future. sephiroth as a being is for above any other living thing on the planet. a mix of soldier, human and the calamity, jenova. kratos is similar but the difference is that he has died several times. the only reason he is able to defeat the gods is because once he has lost he returns from hell and finds an exploit to defeat them. weather it be a magical item or the advantage of previously witnessing their skills.
No, killing Poseidon, Hades, Hermes, or Cronos were not EXPLOITS. He straight-up outfought those characters. It didn't take an 'exploit' of anything of Thanatos for Kratos to kill him, it took getting extra pissed at seeing Deimos get killed to the point that Kratos wasn't even flinching from Thanatos' attacks. Until something is actually made of Sephiroth's last line, the most it can ever amount to is him putting being a sore loser into fancy words, nothing more. On that note, it took a good few series of exploits for Sephiroth to become near as powerful as he did by the time of FFVII.
sorry raw i didn't mean ALL of the gods. and yeah he did outfight them. what i guess i'm trying to say is sephiroths style of fighting and specific skills and abilities are what makes him a perfect person to combat kratos. i personally don't think kratos will ever be fast enough to keep up with sephiroths brutal and relentless sword fighting. i really need to play the series again and the few games i missed from god of war. kratos' badassness is coming back to me and i really did love the games.
Sephiroth's 'style of fighting' and specific skills weren't enough to keep him from letting otherwise obviously weaker characters than Kratos take advantage of his arrogance, nor are they anything Kratos' opponents haven't had to one level or another (including taking advantage of an opponent's arrogance ala Hercules). The brutal and relentless sword fighting from the actual God of War didn't put Kratos down, nor did a powered-up lightning bolt at point-blank range from Zeus when the same attack nearly severed a Titan's hand. Sephiroth as he is in this thread (essentially before he even destroyed Nibelheim) is nothing that Kratos hasn't faced worse versions of.
Sephiroth has the power of mako energy, when he is cloaked in this energy his attacks are nearly unstoppable. more unstoppable, i would say, than a lightning bolt from zeus. also when you say "obviously weaker characters" are you referring to cloud or vincent? because i think both could defeat kratos. you're not giving sephiroth enough merit. Sephiroth is far more maneuverable than kratos and he can slice apart skyscrapers in one slash. also sephiroth has the air advantage. if sephiroth got kratos into the air kratos would be done for. i'm not going to go into the mental stability of the characters affecting the fight. i'd like to hear how you think kratos could do anything once he is suspended in midair while thousands of sephiroths slashes are ripping him appart.
