That's not really saying he could've killed him. He said he left him alive as in didn't even try to finish the job or KO him. Thor immediately got up afterwards so you can't say that he was wide open to die.

In the rematch Thor decimated him with his hammer. Thor knew who he was fighting and wrecked him. Its 1-1. The Rulk's win was over a clueless Thor and with his hammer while Thor clearly won the rematch.
Id say Thor takes the majority now that he knows who Rulk is.

The warhammer decides this. It decided both matches. Rulk has never defeated Thor without it. Its Thor's weapon therefore he wins.

2) In the second fight (aka ambush) Rulk never even saw thor coming. Thor basically smacked Rulk around before Rulk even had his bearings.
Imagine if it was the other way around, if Thor was engaged in a fight with Green Hulk, and Rulk jumped out of nowhere and just started wailing on Thor, would you count that as a fair match?

1. Rulk was beating Thor BEFORE he took the warhammer. Rulk could not have gotten the warhammer had he not already been winning. So Rulk HAS beaten Thor even when Thor had his hammer.
2. Thor has never beaten Rulk without a surprise attack.

I just don't want people distorting what happened. People shouldn't diminish or exaggerate what Rulk did.
Thor took Rulk by surprise in the middle of a fight and had him on the ropes. That's all that it was, nothing more, nothing less.

Good thing I'm not putting in personal opinion.
And the reason I'm not saying it was necessarily two separate fight is because the time that passed between moon and Earth scenarios was at max a few moments long.
and yes he did shrug off the best Rulk could dish out or did you not see him wailing on Rulk moments after Rulk left him. That seems to suggest to me that Thor wasn't that fazed from Rulk's attack. Not mention Thor was shown talking and getting angry the moment Rulk left.
And it's not making excuses it is what happened on panel.
Thor underestimated and held back against Rulk, like usually does against opponents so not really a shocker there.
If you want more proof of this simply go back to the first fight. Thor was gonna take Rulk back to Earth, so they could continue their fight. If anything that is when Rulk caught Thor by surpise and wailed him. If Thor wanted to he could have easily left Rulk there to die in space.
Then he got surprised and overwhelmed for a few moments then when he got back he begin to beat down the Rulk.
Plus the sucker punch argument is funny. If Rulk was as strong as you are suggesting then after the first hit from Thor he would have been able to counter and be fine. The fact is it was shown Thor could take Rulk's best and keep coming, while it was also shown that Thor had the power to beat the Rulk.
In fact this is very similar to classic Thor comics. Where Thor kinda sorta gets ebat at first then comes back to layeth the smacketh down.
