BRETT RATNER TAKING ON YET ANOTHER PROJECT WITH CONAN?

#4 Director Brett Ratner already has an insanely tight development slate that is only rivaled, perhaps, by Guillermo del Toro and Ridley Scott; Beverly Hills Cop 4, Rush Hour 4, Playboy, God of War and Harbinger are all reportedly top priorities. And yet, his name is being bandied around this week as the top choice for Lionsgate's long-in-development adaptation of the Robert E. Howard barbarian fantasy, Conan, which reportedly strives to be closer to the source material than the 1980s movies starring the current governor of California. This story isn't being run (yet) in any of the trades, but Harry Knowles' AICN is saying Ratner's involvement is "official," and so it's got to be true, right? Brett Ratner is a capable director known for working reliably and within budget, but a chief criticism of him is that he lacks a certain artistic flair. You'd be hard pressed to identify a movie as being "Ratnerian," for example. And Conan probably would be best served by someone who brings something special to the project, I think. What thinkest thou?

I'm looking forward to this movie but if Brett Ratner is directing i will no longer be hopeful or interested.

Rivaled by Del Toro ?

Pffft at least Del Toro makes batter films in Ratner.

Rush Hour 4? 😑

Ratner earned my respect for his work on Red Dragon; he's a capable director but lacks a style of his own. Maybe that's why Red Dragon & X-Men 3 worked well - continuing the stories of the series, he imitated the styles of Jonathan Demme(from 'The Silence Of The Lambs'😉 & Bryan Singer, respectfully. Making his own films? Not quite as successful.

Being more 'faithful' to the source? John Milius & Oliver Stone were big Robert Howard fans, and did the first Conan with whatever tech was possible in 1982.

...Rush Hour 4? 😑

Arnold is too old to reprise his role..

Just let the project die and maybe they'll just write more Conan novels

You don't need Arnold for a Conan movie just good directing and action. As a kid i liked Arnold as Conan but as an Adult i realize he was nothing more than a set piece.

And for ****s sake don't cast a Wrestler for the role.....

Umm.....you saw X3 right? there you go.

I'd say most of the faults of X3 were on the writers. A good director can't save a horrible script, and mediocre director will have even less luck. I know that David Hayter wrote the first two X-Men films but didn't work on the third, I'd say that had more to do with the decline in quality than Ratner.

I kind of agree with that. X-3 was a studio movie more than anything. I'm assuming that Ratner didn't have much weight to throw around in the production of that movie. He was given a gimmie blockbuster and told what was expected from him. He probably wasn't in any kind of position to step on any toe's but i still feel that he is a bad Director.

Nathan Jones should be Conan.

Dolph Lundgren to Have a Role in Conan?

Dolph Lundgren told MTV that he is talking to producers of the new Conan movie about maybe playing a role in the film.

"I've talked to the producers about doing something for 'Conan,'" he said. He added that "it's too early" when asked what type of role he's looking for and he said he didn't expect to know more until "probably next year."

Marcus Nispel will direct the Lionsgate release, which is based on Robert E. Howard's mythical conqueror Conan the Barbarian. The new version is expected to be more faithful to Howard's original creation than were the Arnold Schwarzenegger films.
