Damn - did any of you ever read the books? o_O I am getting this horrible, sinking feelng that the majority of posters are comparing this film with the Arnie Swhartzchxhenggerr film - which had about as much to do with Conan as my spelling of Arnie's surname did... :-/

I have a lot of Conan comics. This movie was sh1t. It wasn't the actors, it was the director that messed up. He missed the theme of the movie, by not seeing how important an archaic dialect is, when making a movie that is centered on ancient and archaic times. I was surprised that Conan didn't say "hey whats going on dawg".

I only have one sadly, although I have three books which do have some input from L. Sprague de Camp (one of them being entirely 'his'๐Ÿ˜‰. It's all very confusing as to why people are negative about de Camp, he carried on the adventures of Conan and credits Howard as the creator every time.

At least it's not like the situation with Nathan Long taking over the Warhammer 'Slayer' series while William King is still alive.

Anyway, I haven't seen Momoa's Conan film but I can say for certain that neither he or Arnie have entirely fitted the look. Momoa is closer, but he doesn't have blue eyes or a square-cut mane of jet-black hair. Or the physique really, he looked ripped, but not much of a presence or bulk. The detractors of Arnie are very loud but his Conan films are very memorable and kept the essence of the character in the public eye to such a degree that Arnie couldn't even be Kalidor in 'Red Sonja' without people calling him 'Conan undercover' or something like that.

People are quick to denounce Arnie but apart from his hair he portrayed Conan well, his strength, his sword skill, his life as a thief, his sense of right and wrong, his stealth and craftiness, fondness for drink etc. The much disliked 'Destroyer' has all of these and is still hated by 'Barbarian' fans who disliked the tone lightening slightly.

Now your just getting picky there.

I knew this was going to be bad once I saw the trailer. :/

Well, you know... people were suddenly being picky about Arnie's hair and acting when Momoa's film was announced and made and they were failing to see the same things about Momoa's, just an avalanche of 'It's so like the books!!!Unlike Arnie's BORING films'.

They were acting like Robert E. Howard himself rose from the grave and proclaimed this was the true version. It's doubtful whether he'd have wanted a film anyway but so many people had to speak up for him nevertheless.

I loved the part where he's drinking with that one pirate dude. Forgot his name, movie was easily forgettable, but while they're drinking there's like a huge dude sittin' between them. I was like: "What the fu-?! That dude sittin' there makes a better Conan than that Conan, shit."

Momoa was perfect, you're right he could have been 10-15 pounds heavier, but his height was right. What they needed was a physical nemesis that left you wondering from beginning to end, whether Conan had the stones to take him out. Nathan Jones would have been great ( http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0428923/ ) As would a big name like Jet Li. The speech was also off as it made me feel like I was listening to a modern age person ๐Ÿ˜ฌ . The blue eyes didn't tear me away from the character, because there have been times in the comics that Conan has been portrayed to have brown eyes.

Arnold wasn't really a Cimmerian, he was simply too Northern European looking to be a Cimmerian, who have always been portrayed as having bronze skin. All of that other good stuff that you are mentioning (sword fighting, stealth.. etc..) wasn't Arnold's doing but the director's. Ridley Scott is the perfect Conan director, as he would not only capture the feel of ancient cities/times, but also the realism with a splash of fantasy as well without the extra slices of cheese (Gladiator, Legend).
