Well the LOTR movies were excellent, he deserves credit for them.
And I think Speilbergh is over rated in the fact that now his work can slip and people wouldn't have the guts to criticize, they would just praise him anyways.

i definately, definately agree with you. no fence to anyone, but ET sucked major ass and everyones callin it the best movie ever!
peter jackson absolutely 100% gets my vote. the LotR movies were amazingly made. really captured the feeling and intimacy of the books.

the story of the books were about the hobbits and how strong they really are as a race, and bout all races uniting together. and i didnt see the strentgh of the hobbits in the movie. but he did bring a whole butt load of visual effects to the scene. he was all eye candy!

What is his formula?

Because he's popular?

over the top characters + over the top situations + visual effects out the ass = 95% Spielberg films.

spielberg reminds me of the Stephen King of the movies... they both ahve interesting stories, but are so stylistic that you have to really enjoy that style to like them.

I agree about Spielberg...I wonder what would happen if he did something that was edgier?

pj wasnt all eye candy.

okay, you can't say spielberg is overrated b/c a lot of people like him. He's done tons of movies, a lot of which were great. Yes, he's one of those directors that people just mention all the time but guess what? So is Stanley Kubrick. Everyone who thinks they know a lot about cinema likes Kubrick. I'll give you Full Metal Jacket but 2001 sucked balls (some other are good, most are bad). THE END.

kubrick is artsy-fartsy with his movies. the greatest thing bout kubricks work is that every movie is unique in its own way, where on the other hand spielberg's movies seem to have the same theme and idea (not saying i dont enjoy his work).

i agree that 2001 is a hard movie to watch. intruth i have yet to sit down and watch the entire movie in one sitting! but i enjoy the movie!

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Spielberg's got the child thing going on amongst other of the same things but that's what he likes. Kubrick is definitely more diverse except for he tries to make everything a little too desperately weird. Like the part in 2001 where there's just a whole bunch of colors running across the screen for like ten minutes, and there's supposed to be this huge deeper meaning (and there is, if you're high).

Okay, I HATED 2001, and it's not like I can't take an intellectual film. It was just so pretentious. I totally agree with the colors thing, and it bothered me a lot that there really wasn't a main character. Later on in the film, there sort of was one. ugh, boo urns.

Yeah, but how lame is "Dave?" BTW, poptarts, are we the only ones online now or something???

stanly kubrick, david fincher, guy richie, orson wells, hitchcock, john waters, darren aronofsky, danny boyle, some of burtons stuff, and of course quentin.

these are all the directors that i look to for anything cinema.

john waters is original I wish he was putting out something soon

but BEST director of all time = Hitchcock

Okay for me is QT, but since you included "Influential" in the title then these are my choices:

Akira Kurosawa (1910-1998)

All his Samurai movies are classic. One movie that has marvel me ever since I saw it was "Rashomon" I strongly recommend anyone to watch it is just keeps you thinking all the way through the movie.

Fritz Lang (1890-1976)

For me Fritz Lang directed two of the best films ever! "Metropolis" and "M". The former is all about Sci-fi and destiny of human kind. The latter is all about human evil and I love how he portrays criminals in a social society.

Yeah, Rashomon is great and so is M. I haven't checked out Metropolis yet though but the serial killers monologue at the end of M is so good.

no the BEST, not for everyone, not an "easy" director but I would recomend him 2 all openminded ppl. PETER GREENAWAY.

ps Try to start from the cook, the thief his wife and her lover

Metropolis is great! Even though is so old that movie is inspirational! Lang was a great visionary!

Spielberg + Hitchcock, Peter Jackson needs to do a few more good films to be in the top, so in about 5 years he may be the best if in those 5 years he does it again.
