I love 2001..........but I must agree. It is slow and a tad boring............the plot of the movie is over shadowed by Kubrick's artistic style.
I stick with my recomendation for you to watch 2010 : The Year We Make Contact..............it wasn't directed by Kubrick and is nothing like 2001. It's pretty much a straight up sci-fi flick, no art to it...........the plot is very, very good as it explains what happened in 2001........Event Horizon stole alot of ideas from the movie.
I must admit........2001 isn't for everybody. If you're in the mood to just sit back, chill out and grab a bowl of popcorn.......might want to pop something else in the ol' dvd player. If you're in the mood to watch a visual and aurical masterpiece.......2001 is the flick for you.

Note to self: Don't ever rent another Stanley Kubrick movie for as long as I live.I was bored out of my skull with this one. After "Last House on the Left" and "Return fo the Living Dead", I feel as if I am destined to strike out when taking reccomendations from you people. 😮
that's going a little far, you seem to be very cocky 🙄
people have different tastes, just cuz you alone don't like it that doesn't mean it's a bad movie.
Cocky? Not at all, I am super selective as to what I watch, and there are alot of people here with good taste in movies, so I was kinda hoping that since we share things in common, I may get some good suggestions.
It was more of a rib than an insult anyway.
I am still going to find 2010. It was trailered 2001, and I liked what I saw there moreso. Like I said, I am not totally Anti-Kubrick, but it was a little too slow paced for me. There were parts that were kind of inventive for 1968, i.e. the videophone.

Spielberg!? what are you talking about? he sucks! He is the most overrated director ever.
Lord have mercy on your soul for whatever backlash may occur. 😠

Thank You Cinemaaddiction. And remember AI was a Kubrick+Spielberg movie.
ah yes, AI, a good movie that easily could have been one of the greatest films ever had kubrick been able to make it, it was supposedly going to be his ultimate film, and he wanted to make it the modern 2001: A space oddesy, pushing the envelope of what film was, and what it could be. Instead, we got a good movie, but nothing more.
The problem with spielberg is that his movies, while being good, never really add anything new to the picture. His films are very formulaic, but not very innovative or unique. I think he is definately an over rated director in most regards, and should not be mentioned in the same sentance as truley innovative and inspiring film makers like kubrick, hitchcock, and other who changed the ways we looked at film.
1) Hitchcock without question- I've seen at least 30 of his films and was riveted by all 2) Kurasawa - an experimental and philosophical genius
3) Bertolucci who is underrated (www.budweiser.com/1 has a trailer for The Dreamers)
4) Kubrick- NOT including A Clockwork Orange -while as a stand-alone movie it was great, it was a bastardization of Burgess' novel. Don't argue until you've read it. The things in the book that were most meaningful and most disturbing were glossed over for the less important novelty aspects that made it in (along with outside crap that didn't contribute much). AND may I add that the pseudo-film geeks who run around with the "ultra-violence" t-shirts are complete morons who generally don't understand that that means "rape," even after you explain it to them. Real film geeks, however, are cool w me.
that is all.
oh, yeah-- and no lucas bc his real talent lies in imagination, editing, and producing. he's said in many interviews that he doesn't like directing and only started doing it in self-defense as an editor.
spielberg i love... maybe he's #5, followed by (fellow movie-brats) coppola & scorsese tied at #6
what about Quentin...whether you like him or not he has brought alot to film in his only 10 years of writing/directing. although his stories are ripped and have been told hundreds of times, he still adds a style of his own to each of his movies. so its the same story with a new take on it, and that to me is innovating...
The thing is ....Tarantino has only directed four movies. He has now directed 4 movies......in 4 different genres.......none of which set the standards for their genres, much less all of cinema.
He makes great films, I'm a fan ..............but to say his directing skills on those 4 movies even compare with Kubrick who directed masterpieces decade after decade after decade..........I don't believe I could go that far. If Quentin's movies are still as good 30 years from now and he's still churning them out with equal brilliance, he may rank up there with Kubrick.
