Isn't leia simply unlock hidden resources within luke (grrr how do you capitalize when using an iPod?)? In that case Luke beat sidious in a lightsaber duel. I'd say that those hidden resources aka potential would've been reached by now. Luke and leia also severed sidious's connection with the force and his Force storm lost control and Sidious died. Luke in his latest incarnation is far more powerful than DE Luke and Leia oh I figured out how to capitalize on and iPod.

Fighting someone like The Emperor, who has turned him to the Dark Side before, I think he'd be even more wary of unleashing himself....which only helps Sidious here.

I think you hit it right on the nail. Time and again, Luke is always bitching about controlling himself and on his fear of the dark side. That could potentially explain his inconsistent Force abilities.
Like how long it took him to find and kill off Lomi Plo and Welk, and that he couldn't see beyond her "doubt cloak" ability that allowed her to be invisible to doubters -stupid. Was Lomi Plo seriously so strong as to be on the level of Luke, Sidious, or Bane? Or his crappy performances against Lumiya. Or his fear of taking out his nephew because of vengeance. Or his god-awful fight against the monk in FOTJ. The list goes on and on....Either Luke's got a piston that won't run right, or he's got a mental block.
It has to be his pussy-like fear of the dark side, or something as a simple as a plot device so he can still be viewed as mortal.
