I thought we agreed on DBZ being canon? The movies are all part of "Z".

no we didn't

movies arn't canon, they exist in their own timelines since events never happened when they appear to have happened in the films, + the villains are made up.

naruto and other shonen (manga for boys) does the same thing

So, we can't use ABC logic nor the anime for Vegeta/Cell?

I'll concede that point is you can tell me when the first Cooler movie took place in the anime timeline.

dbz is linear since it's written drawn by one guy, and in dbz characters get stronger, so you can within reason. (cell would stomp say frieza any day of the week)

the non-canon elements are the filler episodes cause they are simply animated shows not using the canon manga as a storyboard, they are rather animations studio fast food with no real substance or importance.

it'll spoil your dinner

After the Frieza saga, before the Android saga when the Z fighters were training.

You could pretty much do whatever you want.

It's other posters accepting it that's the problem. 😛

The rule of thumb on anime basically goes: Creator/co-owner material is canon. Filler stuff for the anime and external movies is non-canon.

And as far as ABC logic goes, I don't pretend to understand where the line is drawn.. To a point, I think a little ABC logic is inescapable in debate.

E.g., Thanos makes Galactus's struggle to crack his shield, and survives an extended beatdown from Odin, hence Thor at classic power levels ain't busting down his shield or threatening his person. That's ABC logic, but it's also not anything most people would argue with...

Can't be. Goku still can't go supersaiyan at will in that movie.

comics are different since different writers have their own versions of characters, which gives us a rough description of the character over time (kinda like james bond)

geoff loeb superman = red hulk

manga is almost always one dude and a pen for the entire thing. if it's popular, animation studios extent the issues as far as they can to make dough, and of they encroach on the new issues still being made (manga writers work on their own speed), fillers will be made to create distance. the manga writer has nothing to do with these fillers

naruto has almost 200 episodes of fillers cause of this, i think more than the canon epidodes

that's acceptable.

saying Cell can bust a planet with a punch... not so much.

cell selfdestructed to blow up the kai planet, the earth was his target though but goku interfered

I've got a question about Saiyans ability to survive in space. IIRC, and please correct me if I'm wrong, didn't Goku's Dad Bardock fly up into space to assault Frieza when he was in orbit above planet Vegeta just before he destroyed it with the Death Ball? And also, wasn't there an episode just after the Frieza Saga where Vegeta was looking for Goku in space and destroyed an asteroid?

To Bardock - yes (not sure if it's canon though)
To Vegeta - If you're reffering to the point where he became a SS for the first time, he was an a planet so I guess the planet had an atmosphere and before he destroyed the asteroid he said if his spaceship would get destroyed he would be ****ed.

So he destroyed the asteroid from the planet's surface? I thought he was on the asteroid, destroyed it, then returned to his ship. Hmm, I'm going to have to re-watch those episodes.

edit

I also think I remember an episode where Vegeta & Nappa destroyed an alien planet en route to Earth and Vegeta opened his ship in space to destroy it with a blast. Some planet full of bug looking aliens IIRC.

Yes but I think some people here say the Vegeta & Nappa travel is a filler and non canon or not valid, no clue, I've only watched the anime.

But wouldn't it be canon to the anime version of the characters, "filler" or not? It still occurred in the narrative of the cartoon. I mean hell, I know, for example, that there was an episode where Goku forgot he could fly, but I just attribute that to cartoon silliness like Fred Flintstone and Barney running past the same table and doorway 16 times consecutively while chasing eachother yet still being in the living room. It doesn't necessarily detract from the entire story.

I agree with that but most here doesn't it should had been clear from the begining what kind of stuff we use imo (filler, anime, manga whatever) plus ABC logic is restricted and most in DBZ is based on that.

So like I said in the beginning we have a fundamental problem for these kind of threads and can pretty much throw all of them away.
