The Avengers vs. The Dark Knight Rises (opening nite & wknd)

Srank I bet avengers crushes iron man in the box office. In fact I go out on a limb and say it say it grosses the most money this year of any movie by a large margin.

Some people are estimating above 700 mil box office for Avengers... that just seems like a recipe for a box office disappointment to me. The Iron Man films are the only Marvel movie to do above 200 mil so far.

I assume your talking about US receipts only. Because many Marvel movies have grossed well above 200 mill worldwide.

Worldwide 700mill sounds reasonable for Avengers.

TDKR should gross at least 800.

Of course this is assuming both movies are awsome.

Domestically, yes. But worldwide both Thor and Captain America made more than 200 mil.

Anyway, Ironman 2 made over 600 mil worldwide. With 3D sales I can see Avengers pushing 800 mil easily enough.

Lol.

It's doubtful it will beat TDKR or the Hobbit (which will likely be the biggest film of the year). The idea that it will win in a landslide is laughable.

Some of these guys are a bit over excited.

Ive not checked US Domestic figures, but worldwide:

All the Marvel studios movies have made over 200mill including the most unsuccessful which was The Incredible Hulk.

700mill worldwide gross for Avengers is very reasonable. It might even push it to 800mill.

Yeah I was talking Domestic. 700 - 800 mil world wide is reasonable.

Let's see what happens...

I hope it shatters records!

Just imagine how much Disney will pour into marvel movies if this movie blew all others outta the water just opening weekend. 😱

The Hollywood Reporter pointed out a survey over at Fandango which puts Marvel's The Avengers at the top of the list for most anticipated movie of the summer. As you can see from the results below, Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble has a mighty 31% of votes from men and an admirable 16% from women. This puts it ahead of both The Dark Knight Rises in both categories, although Snow White and the Huntsman came out as the most anticipated for women (The Amazing Spider-Man oddly appears in neither list). Fandango Editor-in Chief Chuck Walton had this to say. "It’s clear from the Fandango survey that there’s something for both men and women at the movies this summer. After an incredible first quarter, Hollywood is delivering even more spectacular choices for moviegoers in what’s shaping up to be one of the biggest summers in years."

Men’s Picks for Most Anticipated Summer Movie:

1. The Avengers - 31%
2. The Dark Knight Rises - 23%
3. The Bourne Legacy - 14%
4. Men in Black 3 - 8%
5. Prometheus - 7%

Women’s Picks for Most Anticipated Summer Movie:

1. Snow White and the Huntsman - 22%
2. The Avengers - 16%
3. Men in Black 3 - 13%
4. The Dark Knight Rises - 10%
5. Dark Shadows - 8%

Well we'll find out soon.

Btw I argued this whole thread for TDKR making more, just because I think it will. But Im really looking forward to The Avengers. Thor and Iron Man are 2 of my favs, and looking forward to Hulk too.

But I also love this knew Batman series too.

So I wish them both all the success in the world. May the better movie win 🙂

Ok this is kind of embarassing considering how I've argued on this thread, but I think Avengers may beat TDKR now because:

1. I did seriously underestimate the hype.
2. It was awsome. TDKR will also have to be awsome to compete.
3. Avengers is a family movie. The cinema was packed with adults and kids. TDKR won't appeal to kids.
4. Im not sure how much appeal TDKR will have compared to TDK without the Joker and Heath Ledger's awsome performance.

Anyway Im watching Avengers again tomorrow. Here's hoping I will want to see TDKR a second time on the big screen.

i think its still too soon to tell. some polls have the dark knight rises as the most anticipated and if the marketing campaign is close or same as tdk, tdkr will be huge. marketing starts next month so we will see.

plus there is a rumor that man of steel will have a teaser trailer before the movie. and a possible justice league reference in mos.

Well I said from day1 it will ultimately depend on the quality of the movies. Avengers has delivered there, we still don't know about TDKR.

But one thing I noticed for Avengers was the cinema was packed with families and kids. TDKR will not attract a family audience.

But then again it was the same with TDK which became the biggest superhero movie of all time. Of course that had Heath Ledger's excellent performance as the Joker selling it.

Will just have to see. That's good though about the Superman trailer.

Word last week was that pre-sale tickets for this was bigger than the last several Marvel Studios movies combined. 😱

This might possibly be the biggest moneymaking Marvel movie yet - bigger than Spider Man 3 - and might equal The Dark Knight's haul.

It was ultimately word of mouth. I saw TDK 2 times and each time had families. Batman is popular among children.

am predicting at least $175 million opening weekend for the avengers..

new trailer for the dark knight rises..

There will be families, but Avengers attracts more of that target audience Imo. Nolan's Batman series has clearly targetted an older audience. Which is how it should be for Batman.

Oh and in the UK kids wern't allowed to watch TDK. Not sure about other parts of the world.

Anyway will have to see. I think TDKR looks awsome. Can't wait. In the mean time gonna keep watching Avengers 🙂

Avengers already made over 200 million opening weekend! Shattering Harry Potter and the deadly hollows part 2 who's record was 169 million!

Here's a current updated list.

DKR is going to have a long mountain to climb to beat that. Since it wasn't realeased in 3-D, it might not do it, however it could, since the anticipation is huge and the 3rd and final installment always does better. At least currently.
