Originally posted by dadudemonIf action is your thing your prayers will be answered with a catch, repetitive action. There is also no buildup when we see the final battle. Everything just sort of happens. When Bane met up with Batman in that film there's a real pull you in factor to the moment but in this movie it just does nothing. Just sort of happens.
Thanks for the review. Dang it...I had high hopes. I wanted to see what a film would be like with current technology that would most closely resemble what we would do with Dragonball.
If movies have souls this one clearly did not have one. Go see it for yourself. I can only speak for myself and comment on what the two guys i went with said. The two other guys I saw it with did not care for it either. The battles with Zod are heavy with computer generated faces and images thrown in which also hurts it.
When we see the life choices Superman makes it is a very cold, human, vulnerable Superman. I see where they were going but they just failed to pull it off. The Superman I have come to know and hate wouldn't do a lot of the actions he does in this film. To me its a generic humanistic Superman with an S on his chest. The search goes for on the next Christopher Reeve.
Well. Here's my thoughts.
Spoiler:
it's a mixed bag. As a film that portrays superpowered beings squaring off then it makes the little skirmish between Thor and Hulk looked like women and handbags in the nightclub. That being said it's at times just too fast. You don't see clearly what happens. You know people are getting caught in the crossfire but you simply don't see any of it until the action slows down.As for the origin portrayal and Clark growing up. It's done quite well in a series of flashbacks but unfortunately if you've watched the trailers then you've pretty much seen it all already. There's only 2 bits you won't have. Clark being 'bullied' by a bigger boy and instead of hitting back he holds onto the fence until his bullies have walked away after they spot Clark's Dad watching and Clark leaves a dent in the metal pole he's been holding on to. A minor scene although it seems to be representative of Clark's young life. He has no friends although Lana sticks up for him on the bus when he's being bullied yet again prior to it bursting a tyre and going off the bridge which is the scene in which he pushes the bus out of the river. And the only other 'friend' he has as a boy is the fat ginger kid he saves from the river as well and when I say 'friend' I really mean he helps Clark off the ground after the bullies go away in the scene mentioned above.
Which brings me to another point. You can guess from above that Clark seems to have a pretty miserable existence as a kid. Yet we're expected to believe that only the love of his adoptive parents kept him well balanced. Yet the Kents are glum and serious all the time. It leaves you with the impression that had Clark been a human boy he'd have ended up killing small animals and going down the Jeffrey Dahmer route as opposed to the bastion of virtue he becomes. Which brings me on to a wider problem with the film. I mentioned that the Kents were glum and serious and Clark is glum and serious. A problem in the film is there's no balancing character. His real parents. Glum and serious. Lois lane? Glum and serious. Zod and his crew? Glum and serious. The assorted generals and army types from earth? Glum and serious. Even Perry White who is the most charismatic person in the old films by miles is glum and serious. It just makes you think 'I wouldn't give a **** if they all died' which is a fatal mistake in trying to get people to invest in a film. Even in the Batman trilogy, as serious as most of the characters were, there are balances in personality. Man of Steel lacks it completely. It almost completely lacks any levity to the apparent misery of Clark's life. The single and solitary time he finally snaps at being bullied is when he's grown up and getting humiliated in the diner where he works by a stereotypica trucker. His revenge for getting pint of beer poured over him? To trash the guy's big rig and impale it on its cargo of logs. Which apparently doesn't cause enough noise for anyone to notice and which you don't see on screen anyway. A bit of a petty over reaction I'd say.
One aspect that sticks out like a sore thumb is the scenes that Snyder clearly has a comic pane scene in his mind for. 2 in particular are the 'dream sequence' when Zod is in Kal's mind and you see his plans for earth and Kal is being buried under skeletons. It's very framed and deliberate. Another is when Zod is on his knees in the midst of the rubble of central metropolis and Kal is facing him across an open flat piece of ground. These scenes have obviously had a clear storyboarded look to them but stand out too much as if the director wants you to see his vision for certain scenes rather than the whole.
On the whole it has some serious flaws that are in large part due to bad editing. Despite its near 2 1/2 hours it feels too rushed. Makes you think that a natural destruction of krypton and a different bad guy could've been a better choice in order to pace the origin story and still fit a good world saving storyline in full.
For those of you wondering about post-credits...don't. There's nothing. And they're long credits. Like 'hot shots' credits long.
All things considered I thought it was good but not great. As a movie showing Super powers it doesn't have an equal although there's no strength feats like Returns superman lifting a continent into space or speed feats like Reeves superman reversing the earth's rotation and turning back time.
For me it doesn't live up to the epic grandeur that the 3rd trailer presented.
Score? 7.5/10. A decent effort but won't live up to the hype for most.
Saw this at a local midnight showing last night. Honestly, this lived up every bit to the hype for me. The action was probably the best you'll see in any comic book movie to date with the ONLY possible exception maybe being Avengers. because of the diversity.
Russell Crowe as Jor-El stole the show for me.
The action was INCREDIBLE. Completely erases Superman Returns from cinematic existence.
Spoiler:
My only complaint(and its a small gripe) is that I didn't feel Zod stole the show as much as he should have. Shannon plays him as a guy that thinks he's doing the right thing. But, at the end, when he "loses" his people I just wanted him to become this badass figure and he kind of never did.
Iron Man 3 is NO competition to this DC masterpiece.
Also, I love the Zimmer score for this. It's not Batman but it's cool in a more subtle way. The theme that plays throughout the movie was addicting.
Pretty cool how they kept the big scope and storytelling all under a less than 2.5 hour runtime.
Where does it rank with other films of the genre? I don't know. I'm going to go see this again soon to let it sink in more but it's definitely one of the best and up there with the likes of TDK, TDKR, Watchmen, and Avengers.
