I find it crazy because Superman was crashing through mountains, buildings, falling from space while fighting Zod and took a beam that was terraforming Earth and destroying Metropolis while he was getting weak by the continued exposure to the atmosphere.

I don't remember him crashing through mountains and I honestly missed the entire Metropolis sequence, I went to take a piss. Sorry, but after a certain amount of time, nonstop action with such shitty pacing gets boring. Still a fun movie, I'm going to go watch it again on Tuesday.

He crashed through a mountain when he was learning to fly after he got his suit and Jor-El encouraged him to keep pushing his limits.
Sad that you missed the metropolis sequence. This explains everything. You haven't seen Zod go all out with full use of his powers. Zod's heat vision made a building collapse.

He did casually pass through it. Surfer shouldn't be in this thread, he's on a completely different level than the Avengers or Man of Steel. Much closer to the comic counterpart, hence the stupid contrived board dependency.
It should be noted that taking out Galactus didn't even kill Surfer, we see him survive.
