No spoilers obviously but rank it in with the other films. Where do you think it fits ?

I'd rank it just a tad above ROTJ/ROTS which are no.3 on my list. Maybe even level with ANH (which is my no.2)

In short: good fun. Harrison Ford rules. Best villain (=Kylo) since ROTJ. It's no ESB, in my book that movie still reigns supreme. But it outshines the PT with great ease. Simple because these characters work! Really good characters that I'd like to see more of.
Biggest positive surprise to me is the character of Dameron Poe. I never kinda liked the way he came across in the trailer. He doesn't have a very large part, but he is very good.

Good to hear, ESB is my fav too and if this is just below that in quality/entertainment, it's good news.

Just to add: it's not a perfect film. A bit predictable, plot is quite similar to ANH and ESB combined. But the characters make up for the lack (?) of imagination for something really new.

Snoke is a bit of a disappointment. I have problems with the lightsaber fight. And with the, in my opinion, too many blatant nods to (read: copies of) OT moments. There's a weird R2-D2 appearance. The space/planet battle at the end looks great but is a bit of a copy from ANH, but less dramatic.

So all in all I have to see it again to make up my mind how to really feel about this movie. It has to simmer a bit. I'm gonna see it again next week.

Spoiler:
Are there any indications on who is more powerful? Luke or Snoke?

They were showing fans in France on Tv walking out after seeing it. Most were saying it's great. Older ones were saying SW is back! And saying it gave a lot of nostalgia to the originals.

But there were some younger fans complaining there was nothing Original about it and that it just revamped stuff from the other movies.

Still doubting Abrams. For shame.

The_Tempest awhile back was making the blatant comparisons (ie not original) to this and the other flicks, kudos to him if it's true.

Pretty obvious the complainers are going to be very vocal about it.

Just like the Trekkers bitched hard about Into Darkness when it was exceptional. I'll decide for myself tomorrow.

So I just got home...

Obviously this is a first impression, and I might feel different about it after a while, but...

Spoiler:
It's not bad. It's not bad at all. It's actually good in places. Maybe even very good at points.

There is a lot, though, and I mean a LOT, of drawing from the old movies. Some of it is fun references and throwbacks, but some feels blatantly lifted from the original trilogy. The strange effect is that at times, it does feel very much like a Star Wars movie. And yet at others, it feels like Abrams took what Lucas had made, and tried a little too hard to put his own spin on it to the point where it felt like he just didn't "get" Star Wars.

****ing strange, I tell ya.

Like I said, it's not a bad movie by any means. I'll probably rewatch it when it comes out on bluray/dvd. Just not clamouring to go and see it again.

So yeah, sure some will disagree. Some might even agree. We'll see.

If true this will probably hurt it's legs a bit. Not saying that it's going to be a bomb by any means; time will tell. Still can't wait to watch it tomorrow.

Doubt it. The reception so far seems to be very positive.

I can agree with Pr on this one.

Spoiler:

It certainly isn't as good as ESB. Let me make that very clear. I think it ranks along the lines of ROTJ/ROTS. With the exception that it feels more like SW than ROTS does.

I enjoyed it a lot. But the constant nods to the OT kinda got the better of me. I think the moment the chess board flickered on was the moment I thought: okay Abrams, we get it. You saw the OT. And then we still had the cantina copy pirate hive of Maz to go through.

Maz a great character though, but her lair was a complete nod to the cantina from ANH and Jabba's palace. No need for that, I don't need to see stuff we've already had. And well, it goes on like that, with a lot of such things, screaming: "Look, we're doing it OT style".

My biggest problem I think is the lightsaber fight. How can anyone with no training stand up to someone with a lot of training? I mean, we saw how Luke's butt got kicked in ESB after a couple of months of training... That bothers me greatly.

And yeah, the plot is basically ANH and ESB in one. Not very inventive, but... done in a new fresh way. And isn't that what Hollywood likes to do: more of the same but different.

One big plus: Harrison Ford really saves the movie. He absolutely rules in a great big part. This old Solo certainly beats his old Indy.

Yeah. From what I've heard this will be easily my biggest problem with the film.

Agreed, though I wouldn't rate it as being on the same level as Jedi personally.

For me, the characters are the best part of the movie. Almost all of them are done so well that I really couldn't think of anyone that dropped the ball. And that new droid is gonna be even more popular with kids than I'd expected.

Question to anyone that has seen it though (if you haven't, it's your fault for reading this):

Spoiler:
at the end when they arrive back in the falcon, did chewie console leia at all? it seemed really weird to me that he seemed to just walk right past her with finn and not be bawling along with leia.

Either way, I am looking forward to the next one, and to Luke dealing with Han's death.
